Kai’s been waiting a while for us to have a look at his 2.8. Also strangely picked up a couple more extra faults after others have played with it recently. Saturday we got her in and up in the air, found out pretty quickly various issues and their causes. We’re going to give everything a refresh but no powder coat this time, we have a strict budget to work to.

first up we pulled the subframe to see the extent of everything. little crispy.
IMG_5149.jpeg

going to give everything a clean up and she how it all fairs
IMG_5150.jpeg

some of the worst bushes I’ve seen
IMG_5151.jpeg

normal handbrake cable condition
IMG_5152.jpeg

we found the source of the vibration when engaging the clutch. These Bluetooth edition gearbox mounts, trouble is these have just been off as another garage had fitted a clutch.
IMG_5154.jpeg

bit of cleaning up to do at the rear.
IMG_5159.jpeg

once seized brake line
IMG_5160.jpeg

some interesting installation of bushes. Not the correct orientation either.
IMG_5161.jpeg

a lot going on this Saturday just gone. We also re moved a S54 engine, another in for breaking.
IMG_5164.jpeg

kept us all busy this weekend.

She needed desperately attention and it was well worth the wait as could not imagine better place to bring her in. You guys are fantastic and can’t wait to see more updates!

Progress is coming on nicely. Hoping to get her all done just before Christmas or at least be 95% there.

Underside got a good clean and some waxoil.
IMG_5203.jpeg

diff was looking very flakey to begin with
IMG_0189.jpeg

@Holliez4 went to town with the wire wheel and gave it a coat of hammerite
IMG_0193.jpeg

after coating, also expertly removed the old diff bush.
IMG_5202.jpeg

beam bushes came out no bother, up there with some of the worst we’ve seen.
IMG_0195.jpeg

new backing plates on, ready for new shoes and a brake upgrade.
IMG_5204.jpeg

new beam bushes in ready to rock

IMG_5215.jpeg

hoping this weekend coming we can get the back end all rebuilt, all the parts have arrived now so we can also get the gearbox back in.

Got some solid work done today. Was only a half but we still managed a good effort between 4 of us.

First job of the day was to fit the new diff bush.
IMG_5228.jpeg

Can confirm she has an LSD unit.
IMG_5227.jpeg

next we replaced all the really tired gearbox components.
IMG_5229.jpeg

the old items were beyond worn in places.
IMG_5230.jpeg

with the gearbox refitted we moved onto the rear. Took a few hours but she’s looking ready to refit now. Can now see the brake upgrade along with braided lines.
IMG_5233.jpeg

diff looking much better
IMG_5234.jpeg

ready to be refitted.

M-Tec are good. I used them on my E85 3.0 and my E89.

Some Christmas Eve fun. Very much was a day of one step forward and two back with everything we touched.

first job of the day was refitting the rear subframe, this meant we had to sort a seized brake fitting out only to find we had to replace the whole line!
IMG_5274.jpeg
IMG_5276.jpeg

Once back in we very quickly noticed the handbrakes were for a pre facelift 1.9 and were too short, so off came the brakes again.
IMG_5279.jpeg
IMG_5278.jpeg

old shocks were totally dead.
IMG_5273.jpeg

be rude not to fit some of Mazza’s finest straps
IMG_5280.jpeg

beam bushes now doing their thing and supporting the weight of the beam
IMG_5281.jpeg

things are in, little mod to get the spare wheel hanging again. Can see the braided lines looking good.
IMG_5282.jpeg

moving up to the front we were greeted with more horrors. Most fixings missing and wrong bolts jammed into the wrong places relying on natures loctite. This bolt is not even off a Z3. It’s 15mm for a start.
IMG_5286.jpeg

also on disassembly of the front to change the backing plates someone got lazy and left the old ABS sensor inside the shield. We also noticed this wheel bearing was totally goosed.
IMG_5284.jpeg

didn’t stop there. Both front callipers were both totalled. One wouldn’t press back in and both had toast bleed nipples.
IMG_5290.jpeg

Right pair
IMG_5293.jpeg

very much a day of fixing other people’s mess. We got there though, just quite a few bits to order.
IMG_5289.jpeg

Needed to also run a new brake line this side.
IMG_5291.jpeg

least she’s mostly back together.
IMG_5294.jpeg

Now shutting the doors for a few days rest ;)
