Jaguar blames demonisation of diesels after UK sales plummet by a fifth in the last three months of 2017

Jaguar Land Rover launched an attack on the demonisation of diesel as sales in the UK sunk by a fifth in the last three months of 2017.

As the car maker revealed a rise in sales for its global business, JLR – which is owned by India conglomerate Tata Group – said that business in the UK had been hammered by the constant attack on diesel engines.

People I've spoken to about this have said there's been a constant stream of customers coming in and saying "I want out of my diesel car"

It's about time the government made up it's mind about what's happening, we're getting all the scare stories about extra taxation, fees for driving in cities. No wonder people are worried.

I don't suppose JLR care too much about lower UK trade, they sell plenty elsewhere.

Does not help the fact that some London Boroughs have added £2 per hour extra to parking charges if you happen to be in a diesel. I swapped to a VW TDi many years ago because of the mileage I was doing.. 50k plus a year as it was the only alternative to keeping costs under control. Now considering a hybrid, but looking at it to be frank it’s just a con. The range of some hybrids is just stupid and then you are back to a high CO petrol car. So where is the logic ?

Not all about CO though, as the diesels emit much more harmful particulates.

As always its swings and roundabouts

Diesels are on their way out, hybrids and ultra efficient petrols in

soon all fossil fuel cars will be heavily penalised

hence my swapping to a hybrid for my new company car

JLR whinging as they are behind the curve on hybrids

I read auto express every week and all the future cars they're talking about are not diesels, as you say, hybrids, full electric, very efficient petrols that Mazda are developing, and one or two hydrogen creations.

I still think the government have just seen an opportunity to jump on the "ooooh, something else we can bung a big tax on" bandwagon.

Something they are not talking about is the loss of all their revenue on petrol/diesel sales.

They'll have to add it to all the new elec stuff somehow.

I went into Toyota today to get some info on the new Supra, they said it will be part electric.

So is it likely the new Z4 may be a Hybrid too then Tim?

Good question Tony, I've no idea.

I had quite a few old school Toyotas when I was younger hence fancying the Supra, but not sure how I feel about the prospect of it being a hybrid.

It is Toyota who are in "partnership" with BMW making the new Z4 and their own model so could be an option.

Is fuel duty the governments biggest income?

Nope, just googled it.

Income tax, national insurance, VAT

But I think fuel duty is probably the next best after those.

Well as smoking and drinking are getting hammered.. I would say that the fuel duty probably is now the biggest. But as more and ore people switch, the will have to look at some other way to tax the driving rich... Pity they forget that public transport does not serve the purpose it was intended too..

Always a very very big point of mine... Why should a private company who make a profit for a shareholder get a priority lane on my road I pay for... and then have the nerve to say its 'public' it used to be when it was owned by local authorities.. but now its all bloody private. ... rant over.

As usual, road tax and then a green tax on dumping your old batteries and buying new ones. (even if they can be recycled?)
Going to be interesting over here as road tax is based on the weight of your car and with a boot full of them, I can't see the cars being that light? Talking non hybrid.

Great question.

I'm not sure

But it is being developed with Toyota and they love a hybrid.

I think it will be petrol only to start with

We were directed towards buying diesels by the government and now they are penalising us it is a disgrace. Ok so it was a mistake on their part so why not make it a gradual transition by phasing diesels out so people can afford to change cars as and when without all the impending cost hikes for diesel drivers. In london Parking charges are higher for diesel drivers in certain boroughs it will be cheaper to park on a yellow line and get a ticket. Rant over.

Why is the whole country being penalised because London and a couple of other large cities have a problem with particulates and NOx from diesel engined cars?
Much of the country does not have an air pollution problem and CO2 is more of a concern due to its global effect (thats another discussion). So driving in these areas would benefit from diesel economy.
Where there is a problem with NOx levels urea based additives (ecoblue) offers a solution for newer cars designed to use it. PM2.5 particulares remain a concern but modern cars with DPF can limit the levels. The effect of older PSVs is rarely mentioned.
Access charges for specific "polluting" vehicles at peak times may be a solution for those areas worst affected, but for many of us the demonisation of diesels is illogical and unnecessary.
Rant over......maybe some discussion?
