Next in the shed we have @Jack Daw pre facelift 2.8. A pristine 2 owner 2.8 that’s got a very complete history. She’s getting nearly the exact treatment we gave Bazza’s car with the exception of all new shocks and mounts.

With Bazza’s rear subframe removal we timed it at 1 hour 30mins because we had one bolt that needed some power tool assistance, with Jacks everything went smoothly and we manage a record breaking 1 hour 10mins. Note this is with 3 people doing simultaneous tasks to speed the process up.

With Bazza’s car rolling out Jacks took its place on the stands.

We begin the strip down on Monday allowing plenty of chatting on the Saturday. Before we dropped the subframe we took a photo of the bush positioning, you’ll notice it’s sat on the plate, this is a clear indication the bushes are shot.

And 1 hour 10mins later.

Underside is still clean for a 22 year old car.

Diff bush was not bad but still came out by hand.

The shocks how ever have no rebound force whatsoever.

We managed to catch up our powder coaters so we’re waiting for the freshly coated subframe from Bazza’s car to come back.

So to stop this happening we have a few subframe sets and an extra beam being dropped off. Not sure where we’re going to keep them all.

Stay tuned for the next update :)

Actually , @Jack Daw , your car has had a 3 litre engine put in and currently Lee and Gaz are hammering the guts out of it round the nurburgring.

@Bazza told them to do it =))=))

We are reaching new highs (low’s) of Z3 weirdness now...my car already has bits from at least 6 other cars on it but I am proud to say it’s wearing its original undergarments (albeit they been manhandled in the shed a few times, have some purple rubber bits hanging of them and are very brown and crusty :yuck:)

Today good progress was made. I started taking delivery of parts and the powder coated subframe was finished ahead of schedule.

So much shinny black stuff :D

Then it was time to stock take. Only thing missing was the braided brake lines.

First we thought we would get the new front shocks on. Safe to say the old shocks were original BMW, although I would say these have been changed once as there were some tell tail signs I weren’t the first.

Totally forgot to take an after photo..... fail.

Once they were on we moved to the back and fitted the new tank straps. We then moved onto fitting new FAG bearings in the swing arms along with new backing plates.

Then it was time to bolt it all together ready for reinstall tomorrow. We also got the new rear shocks assembled so they’re ready to fit once needed.

Over the last two days I’ve been doing a few jobs to speed up Jacks build. With the heat levels nearing 40* inside the garage we thought we would get the majority of the work done ready for Saturday.

A few shots of the underside. Looking much cleaner now.

It’s worth pointing out a good way to tell if your beam bushes are shot, before and after photos show there should be a good 10-15mm space under the bush. On removal the bush was resting on the plate.

Thank you all guys, @Lee, @Gazza, @ pgunter and Trev for such a superb finish on the refurbished powder coated rear beam and suspension. Reassurance now that all the undercarriage is as good as new, Confidence now that if pushed hard the Z will respond as intended and safely.
The transformation overall is excellent a pleasure to drive home and notice the improvement. I always thought it was a sound car now it really is !
Thank you again @Lee and team really appreciated.

The before and after pictures of the beam bushes are an easy “tell” if they’re knackered, another one is the loud crack or knock when you hit a pothole as the beam hits the bottom plate.

Looking like another fine job Lee!

Tony.
