Just dug the MINI out of the driveway to pop in to Swindon, and it's pretty iffy out and about. As I drove over the M4 junction, I could see it was down to two lanes either direction. The A/B roads round here are reasonable clear in most places.

The MINI got up the hill I live on without even the slightest traction control light. First time I've driven up that road in snow in 4 years... #:-s

Just got in from Rugby still some fools out there not in a ditch yet.

The wonders of traction control floor the accelerator in the 5 series and it goes along as if you hadn't touched the pedal.

We've had 4/5 inches

we had it quite bad here in the midlands, roads are like a skating rink. Ended up at a 30 degree angle doing 45mph down the M1 last night trying to get to Nottingham (ive still not stopped screaming) but the grit wagon has been round this morning so its not too bad.

^ Nope, just waiting for this to happen.......Elfstedentocht,

a speed skating match (with 200 contestants) and a leisure skating tour (with 16,000 skaters)

As of 17 January 2013 the last tours were held in 1985, 1986 and 1997. The rules allow the tour to be held only if the ice is, and remains, at least 15 centimetres thick along the entire course.
All skaters must be members of the Association of the Eleven Frisian Cities. A starting permit is required. Skaters must collect a stamp in each city, and at three secret check points, and must finish the course before midnight. When the ice is suitable the tour is announced, and starts within 48 hours.

The tour, almost 200 km in length, is conducted on frozen canals, rivers and lakes between the eleven historic Frisian cities: Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker, Dokkum, then returning to Leeuwarden.

There has been mention of skaters visiting all eleven cities of Friesland in one day since 1760.

Hi stevie_a yes, rivers canals and lakes. This is a very rare event, the last time it happened was in 1997.
The natural ice has to be 15cm thick or more before this is aloud to take place and the expectation is that up to 20,000 people will want to participate this year.
