i have a z3 2.8 tu-great car and great condition
it has a problem
have fitted 2 new camshaft sensors which have improved things
when its good its spot on
the other day it went off and lost its throttle response almost as tho entering limp mode-tends to happen when hot temp gauge half way between half and three quarters
thought it was maybe a bit hot
but then did it again when not hot
when it starts up from cold tends to be ok
turn it off and leave and its a lottery
anyone got any ideas?
no codes on my reader-only code was cam sensor -both replaced

What make of sensors did you fit?

Sorry to be a pain, but many non OEM sensors are known for such issues. Many of us have been "burnt" in this way in the past, and will only fit OEM sensors, despite the additional cost. Not what you wanted to hear, but this reflects my experience. Others may have other ideas/thoughts.

You may bet a better response by posting in the Z3 section, rather than this "performance" section.

As Tony has said only bmw or manufacturer like for like ( for example bosch if that the oe supplier to bmw for this part) gives best and most durable results.
Can i ask a few more questions though.
When you say lost its throttle response is that in as revs up but reduced performance or no revving response from throttle pedal.
Do you know which version of the Tu engine you have one has a throttle cable the other is drive by wire throttle.

If "Fly-by-wire" it could be the throttle pedal itself. Having said that I would've expected that to throw a code.

Febi sensors are the only ones I have found that work the same as OE on BMW's. If you are able to accelerate but it's in "limp" mode you will need to change both of the cam sensors for OE or Febi. If you have no acceleration at all from the pedal this was a faulty MAF sensor on mine. Unplug it and see what results you get.

mine is a cable
when it goes off it accelerates but only on a very light throttle
if you press throttle more it seems to bog down more
i would think maf but when i disconnect it it makes no difference
have read that disconnecting maf with running should stall engine-mine does not stall-maf issue maybe?

If you disconnect the MAF it will run in default condition. There should be a code stored. Do you know anyone you could swap with?

afraid not
i thought if you disconnect maf andit sorts issue then maf faulty
when mine goes off does not seem to improve things which is why i think maybe not maf
but also read if unplug maf while running it should stall
mine sort of hiccups but dont stall
no more codes have appeared since fitting cam sensors
