I see different threads about ABS, but I’m not seeing one about the light turning on whenever it feels like turning off again whenever it feels like on my 1999 Z3 2.8L.
There seem to be no specific event (other than driving) to make the light turn on or off.
Our mechanic wants to replace the ASC pump (code 71), the DME crank sensor (code 53), & the speed sensors (code 76).
This ABS insanity is new to us as our (Euro spec) 2001 Z3, 1.9L didn’t have problems with it, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, V.

I had this and the asc light. It was the abs pump module. There is quite a bit on this sight about it. The solder joints fail over time. You can have the module repaired. Unfortunately it can be hit and miss with abs faults trying to diagnose them

Forget the DME, and Crankshaft sensors. The fault lies, most likely, in the soldered joints in the ABS control unit. You can remove it separate to the ABS pump and have the joints resoldered. The speed sensors have individual codes so you can forget those too.
Do you have your own fault code reader? If not, you should buy one and scan it yourself.

Tony.

What wheel sensor faults does it show.
If its showing a speed sensor fault should show which specific sensor it is yours being a 99 should be the 2nd gen pump earlier models are notoriously more difficult to diagnose.
but yeah if its showing a wheel sensor fault start there .
my 99 face-lift now has both rear and one front and my 99 pre face-lift 2.8 i just had to replace the nearside front sensor about 3 weeks ago just before my Scottish run because abs and traction control lights came on .
Now this zed also shows a code 71 pump fault but does not cause any issues with the operation if the asc or abs.
So once I had changed the sensor everything was back to normal.

Stephen.
