OK,

Having had a read of the latest BMW Straight Six magazine of the BMW CC regarding an article on the letters page and the requirement to inform the local Police regarding car meets and convoys I though I had better ask both Police forces in my local area regarding the South Downs Run I am planning.

The response was very quick.

Hampshire Police..

Dear Mr Gunter,

thanks for your email. There isn't anything required from you really unless any of the vehicles involved are of an abnormal size or peculiarity that would affect the normal flow of traffic.

You may wish to check the Hampshire County Council and Highways website nearer the time for any road closures or works in any case.

The main thing is to hope it isn't raining!
Enjoy anyway

Hi Paul ,

I have checked with the Road Policing Unit and there is no notification requirements for an event like this , it is just the normal Road Traffic Act that would still have to be adhered to .

For example if you wish to remain 'in convoy' no one would be allowed to block passage of another vehicle to allow this to happen , you would have to pull over untill everyone caught up .

Hope this helps and you all have a nice day !

Kind regards

The secret it appears to not to mention the word Cruise or Rally.. I called my little run out a 'tour' of like minded owners.

After all the discussion regarding do we or don't we I thought it would not hurt.

@Andy McDonnell I thought you might find it useful. Its all in the spin on the words.

@Andy McDonnell it is good just to get clarification. I would say though that if anybody is planning a run out or tour with like minded owners that they email the constabulary of the area just to get it all sorted. You only need one idiot on the day to ruin the whole run.

Should be simular country wide I guess then. So Notts/Derby's police hopefully won't slap me with a fine when Bill and Moz go through a local picturesque village at 110mph!

@Grumpy I would just email the contact email addresses to get confirmation. Remember.. its a 'Tour with like minded owners' not a rally or car club day out. Let us all know what they say.. as it would be good to build up a thread with responses so that if one force was different to the others we could ask why.

As an update I have today received even more emails from the parts of the Police Forces I contacted. Interesting as they might have thought we were up to something when you get a reply from The Strategic and Tactical Operations Department and also an item regarding Public Order.

Mr Gunter,

Thank you for the email.

In relation to your "touring" day, I can suggest the following as best practise and as a way of stopping you and your group from causing worry or concern to local communities and local police forces.

Always abide by the rules of the road - Highway Code, Road traffic Regulations and Offenders act.

Do not drive in a manner that will cause other road users to become infuriated or annoyed.

Always adhere to the direction given by traffic lights, and do not "force" yourselves into situations where group members are trying to stay in a convoy at the expense of other road users.

Essentially this group drive out is a group of friends going for a drive, and nothing more than that other than the same meeting and break points.

With this in mind there shouldn't be much in the way of any impact on communities and the strategic road networks.

I hope that this helps.
