As BMW actually fitted a dipstick on the S54 engine, thought I'd check the oil after driving to office twice this week in it. Pulled the dipstick and gave it an enthusiastic wipe and this. Much rather its snapped off while outside the engine. Installed a nice new one from BMW this morning, and added £22.10 to the maintenance log!

You're lucky, my daily driver, an E91 3 series touring has no dipstick (bar the driver =))) and no spare wheel well. I like to see the colour of my oil. It's checked electronically which can't be read until the car is warmed up for 8+ miles.

Something to be wary of, they obviously suffer from the same plastic embrittelment as some of the other plastic parts.

At least on the X1 I can check the tyres the old way , but not the oil----that only when parked up after a 20 min run.

Earlier this year my daughter (newish Mini Cooper s 8,000 miles old)phoned me at 18.00hrs on a Sunday from a remote part of Wales to say her oil light was on , and a notice to add 1 litre of oil. I thought it would say asap but it did not. I suggested she phoned Mini Breakdown as car is new, they soon arrived (very good considering location and time) and added the 1 litre of oil. Next morning she got a warning her oil was overfull, phoned main dealer and called in (on her way to work) who found they indeed had to remove around 1 litre of oil.

Yes, hated this about my last BMW saloon. No dipstick, never sure about the oil, had a similar thing , warning light - need to add 1 litre - then overful! Progress, my 'bottom' .

Nanny-car makers, do they think people are really so stupid they cannot check their own oil?

Same goes for auto lights, auto wipers, auto gearboxes, auto door closets etc al.

When I want to check my oil,, I reach for my phone now. It's on my BMW app. Doesn't tell you much though just that it's OK.
