Erm it's a tough one. Looks lovely, cat d is only light damage, stolen recovered etc, I doubt it's had much done to correct it. Should have a receipt with all the work done so the buyer can make their own mind up. I think at £12000 maybe but agree £15000 is to much.

Nothing wrong at all with a properly repaired Cat D (or C). But if we said the non Cat value was £20,000 (nice low mileage) then this one is worth * 60% = £12,000 as Grumpy has already observed.

If I wanted it I would buy it as resale value has never been in my buying criteria as most of the cars I have had have gone direct to the scrappy after. But saying that, the most I have ever spent on a car is less than £3k and I tend to keep my cars for a good few yrs.

If you are buying the car as a "keeper" then Cat D needn't be an issue.

A fine model to use which as long as you do your own repairs or are very lucky in not needing many repairs would result in very low cost motoring.

But I don't think it would work so well on a Z3M or for that matter many nicer Zs as they tend to hold their value there or thereabouts or worst case have let's say a 25-40% depreciation if they started off low mileage and had many tens of thousands of miles added and wear/damage gained. In other words Z3s do not tend towards zero value like a family saloon would.

Interesting article above, CAT D shouldn't be a problem depending on the damage area and quality of repairs especially if you want an ///M to keep long term. As for the price well if that wasn't a CAT D and in very good condition it would be up for 18k to 22k as its an S54 with low mileage and dealers (and private sellers) are jumping on the rarity of RHD ///Ms, so if it is in excellent condition is 15k too much? I dont think so personally considering some of the poor examples I have seen for big money. I recently went to look at one for 19k as a keeper expecting it to be immaculate but it was a complete tub (bath tub at that) and nowhere as good as mine even though the mileage was considerably less.

The only thing I'd say is this. Let's say an insurer writes-off a car if it would cost more than 70% of value to fix. So for a nice tidy 2.2 at £4,000 it really wouldn't take much to write it off at a threshold of £2,800. But for a £20k Z3M the threshold would be £14,000.

Now you only need to break-wind on a Z3 to cause £2,800 of damage at big body shop prices. But you'd have to do some serious damage for the bill to be £14k. My assumptions probably aren't perfect but I'm sure you'll see the point.

Your not wrong but the repairs were done by BMW main dealer so the cost for less repairs needed would be very high even in comparison to good independent body repair shops. So when dealing with main dealers I personally dont think your theory stands up quite so well, after all BMW only need to glance at a car and you've spent hundreds.

Even at a main dealers it would have substantial damage to rack up that sort of money.

Circa 14k (bit less would be better), for an ///M with 36k on the clock CAT D or not, I'd have a punt after all the arguments for or against coz if you really want one you wont find one with that mileage for that money without the CAT D. unless ts FUBAR'd:thumbsup:
