How to Read OBD2 Engine Data Logs - This document will guide you in reading engine data logs from scanners

Well, here it is, finally published. After 2 years of learning and 1 year in the writing here is the "How to" for reading OBD2 engine diagnostic logs.

This “How TO” will guide you through:

  • Setting up your scanner to log data (generic instructions),
  • Tests to run to record the logs,
  • How to spread sheet the results and build the charts,
  • What a good result looks like,
  • What common bad results look like,

It is version 1, so there will be errors and corrections...

I use the Veepeak OBD2 reader (in conjunction with a Car Scanner ELM free app on my phone,) and a simple BMW OBD1 to OBD2 adaptor. That way you can read all the info from the OBD1 port properly. I paid a one off fee of £4.99 to upgrade the scanner app to the pro version to unlock everything. Stores multiple cars in its profle for you and retains all their reports and readings. Plenty of Youtube videos on it like this one (503) This $5 OBD2 app can code ECU | ELM327 - YouTube

Dont use Carly! Has a subscription fee every year of about £70 and is massively being promoted everywhere, total rip off.

The Veepeak is £15 and the BMW OBD1 to OBD2 adaptor is £10 from loads of places like amazon or Ebay. In total I've spent £30, no subscriptions and reads everything you'll need. Download links for the scanner app below - Android and Iphone:

Car Scanner ELM OBD2 on the App Store (apple.com)

The OBD2 port does give info, but only engine and auto transmission ECUs.
