Our (well Kims) keyfob packed up the other week, eventually got round to calling BMW Derby yesterday to find out about getting the battery changed, They came back with the answer "it is a sealed unit and you will have to get the key replaced" so i asked them the cost and they told me £140. Called a locksmith up and they told me they could do it for £35. Decided to have a look and 1.99 later key fob now works. Talk about trying to rip folk off. Both companies i gave the details and described the key to them. Yet this is a very simple DIY job.

No way any keyfob is sealed for life that is disgusting behaviour, Autoexpress would love a story like that. X(

The derby dealership tried to rip me off with an alarm key fob a good few years ago and for good measure they put a massive scrape down one of my alloys on my e36. They were custom sprayed (shadow chrome) so they ended up having to pay for the lot to be done.
