Crikey, that's the worst tyre I've ever seen.

Am I correct in thinking it's gone through the threads and that's the metal bits we can see?

When I was a lad, many many years ago I had a Triumph Herald 13/60 (couldn't afford the insurance on a Vitesse).
We went on a camping trip around western Scotland and it was heavily loaded. With the transverse leaf spring rear axle (basically one leaf spring with a wheel on each end) there was a huge camber effect and the inside edges of my rear tyres were down to the steel cords when we got back home much like the ones @t-tony has posted.
I was only a lad but I realised how lucky we had been the day before as we hurtled down the M6 reaching 85mph in places (flat out).

It's hard to believe that people will drive their car with tyres like that ........

He already knew? And, he travels between Lincoln and London all the time.

And he said "There's still plenty of rubber on those tyres - so what are you complaining about"!

On one of my Mercs, when driving back from Germany, the car started to vibrate from the back.
Stopped to have a look, nothing obvious, so carried on, had to keep increasing speed to negate vibration and I knew it was nothing mechanical.
Got it up in the air the next day and had a good look.
Must have driven over something, big lump of rubber missing from the middle of a fairly new tyre....
Right down to the steel bands.
