My 3.0i is all over the place when I set off and only really settles down after about 10 miles, which strikes me as an excessive distance or is that quite normal?

depends on how you drive and ambient temperature. Stop and start through town on a cold morning and they wont warm, spirited driving on a summers day and they might warm in half a mile. I find my tyres generally settle roughly the same time as the engine takes to get up to temperature which is 4-5 miles of b roads at about 3-4C. I'd guess my morning commute is about average so im basing off that.

Which brand of tyres do you have on the car?

Different compounds will have differing warm-up times - I had some Kumhos which in the summer had fantastic grip. However, they seemed to take ages to reach temperature in winter.
