high octane

was talking to a friend today at the garage pumps.
he drives a 500 merc.
he said y the hell u put high octane in at that price.
tbh iv always put it in ...now i must ask is it worth it.
im sure in my head the car runs better with it in so hence it gets it in.
now im not so sure whats your thoughts guys n girls.

I think the consensus is that it treats the components better which in turn will prevent loss of performance. Most also include additives which are supposed to keep the fuel system clean.

I wanted to know whether there is any point me filling up with high oct fuel in a 17 year old car which has probably only ever had regular unleaded?

tbh ash that is a really good point the 17 yr old bit.not sure i would use it if im honest specially with not knowing it ad been run on it in the past.

I mostly always put high octane in,you notice the difference more in a motorbike and sometimes the bike will run like a pig without it.our 300zx only ran well on high octane but it was a jap import and I think their fuel is a higher octane anyway.

I bought a car trailer from a guy thats job is to test fuel.

He said "That the high octane is usually less in octane than the normal fuel as it sells so slowly it goes off in the tanks" He also said "Buy your fuel from a busy petrol station rather than a quiet one". Added that don't buy fuel just after the station had been refilled as it stirs up the rubbish in the tanks!".

There are only 3 refineries in the UK. All supply Shell, BP, Gulf and supermarkets.

I now buy ordinary stuff at busy stations.

I suspect he knows more than most.

@Rev I can believe that. On holiday once in Devon I had to stop to fill up at some tiny petrol station on a country road in the middle of no where. The car ran like crap after that.

So much bio fuel thats in there. It has to test at the refinery to 98, but goes off quickly after that. EU stimulates.

The rules is the rules, and the fact they're rubbish no longer seems to matter!

Octane booster for me then,a friend of mine races with aviation fuel ,it's a job to keep the bike on the ground .
