Hello all, I'm an interloper from the world of a certain small Japanese Roadster!
I'm a diehard, militant top-down sportscar driver (the only way), been considering a few options for my next car (cheap S2000, Mr2 turbo, etc etc). Been pointed to here (and .net) from Pistonheads where I've been doing some research.

This weekend gone I briefly viewed my first Z3, a very tidy but slightly overpriced facelifted 2.8 at a small dealer near me in Castleford. Admittedly Z3 had previously been a bit of an outsider choice, but I surprised myself how much I liked it. Very similar to the Mazda's I've had in terms of Size, space, the practical things, but also very different in the areas that I'm looking to change - power, noise, drama, solidity, etc. And of course the engine, well its a revelation compared to the admittedly indestructable buzzbox I have now!

Is there anyone in Yorkshire or nearby who owns a 2.8 car (or a 3.0 maybe) who wouldnt mind me popping over to meet you, you can show me round your car etc, and if you wish I could sub you some money for petrol as I'd also like a proper ride in one.

I'm sure you'll appreciate this is the best way to get to know the cars, I'll be doing very thorough inspections of any cars I'm looking at buying so it would be good to familiarise myself, learn my way round and note the key things to look out for.

So, if anyone would like to volunteer a bit of time for a chinwag about cars, then I promise I'm not weird!

I'm between Leeds/Selby/York but I'll drive out if someone could make time for me, or meet somewhere if your out for a drive and I'll gladly buy the coffees.

I'd also be interested in popping along if theres any forum meets or run-outs going on anywhere soon?

Welcome to the forum. Think there are a few members around you and sure someone will come along soon to help you out.

Thought i would have a bit of fun and top down motoring and after looking at the oposition, nothing felt/sounded or looked as stylish as the zed, so bought a 2.8 for the summer, but love the car so much its staying with me, that was two years ago :D

You will find a great community here, just ask away if you need anything from peeps.

Look in the ''forthcoming events'' section for meets in your area. Newby Hall is begining of May which is always a good meet, but there will be mini meets in between. (mini as is small)

What are you looking for - any specifics ? my list was a bit long but found him in the end :D

There is a nice 2.2 down the road from me, bit overpriced but you can get a hell of a lot of zed for your money just now.

Hi - I've got a facelifted 2.8 and I'm just off the A1 a few miles south of Ferrybridge. I've just got in from a long hood down drive in the sunshine.

If you PM me your contact details we can see if we can arrange something. The weather isn't looking too good for the next week or so though.

That's good to know theres some others on the forum from nearby, especially as I understand this site is relatively new and un-populated.

Theres no need to try sell me the open top, 2 seat, rear drive experience - I've done my last 40-odd thousand miles as such, rain, snow or shine...!

Admittedly the front runner so far has been an MR2 Turbo, however as said I've been rather taken with the Zed recently.

What am I looking for?

A 2.8, and on my budget more than likely an earlier one.
Not interested in the smaller engine, however If I did spot a facelifted car (much prefer the looks of the rear) or even a 3.0 that would be grand but unlikely I'll afford it.

Its going to be a few months more before I make the jump anyway, just trying to firm up exactly what car I'm going to go for and do my research.

I'll be buying privately more than likely, I know my way round cars fine, and I'm a good mechanic so thats no problem. I do all my own mechanical work, repairs, mods, I've rebuilt engines and suspension etc...

Not scared of older/higher mileage cars at all, which plays into my favour with finding a bargain I hope. Never bought a pup yet, touch wood!

The only other stipulation really is a good colour, despite my current car looking great in Red, the Red Z3's are not pretty! Black or Blue is most likely my favourite, unless maybe I can find a Green one thats NOT been afflicted with an OTT Beige interior (MX-5s are subject to this too unfortunately!).

The car I saw at the Weekend was Topaz blue, which was really nice!

Hello and welcome to the zed side.
Pity you wasnt looking around the begining of Jan as a few of us went up to Whitby and there were various Zs on the run.
If you can stretch to it then i would go for the 3.0 over the 2.8. Better Mpg and there is only the M that is quicker. Day to day running costs are also around the same as the 2.8 if not better. You will also find that you will get just about every thing as standard. You can now get a hell of a lot of car for your Money. The 3.0 like the 2.2 were commanding anything from 5k to 8k most around the 8k just over a year ago and now you can get a good 3.0 for around 4k.

Bill - that's the top reaches of my budget, as said it will more depend on what I find at the time, and what condition I find them in. I'll take a very nice 2.8 over the cheapest 3.0 about...

Zed Carer - that's ideal and very kind, I'll PM you, your very close to me!

Hi Snotrag and welcome to Zorg......

You'll fit in well here and loving your choice.... 2.8 in green..... but I am a bit biaised... mines a 99 on a V with the best rear end shape... but then again I am a bit biaised.

You'll be well looked after with Zed Carer he knows his stuff and you'll need more than 1 coffee to talk about zeds with him :-bd.

Only thing that concerns me is you say you're not weird... well you're gonna have to be a little bit so you don't stand out from the crowd when you're with us lot :D and I'm just curious how you chose your forum name :-\

if the top of your budget is £4k then i'd look for a well looked after 2.8 rather than a 3.0, theres about 30bhp more in the 3.0 but the 2.8 is still quick. With regards to timeline if you wait a few months you'll likely pay a £500 premium for buying one before summer. I bought a very tidy 2.8 with 97k on the clock in september for around £3k. As mentioned, any questions just ask on here and someone will help you out.

Hi snotrag and welcome to our forum :-h
I'm sure ZC will point you in the right direction
However, you should be very careful when considering running costs.
Ask ZC how far it is to the shops in his daily driver, and how far it is in the Zed =))

Hi Snotrag,

You are in very capable hands with Zedcarer we have both done just about everything you can do with our Z3's in terms of maintenance and improvements. I used to own a 2.8 in RED and can I say you need to see a good example of one in red before you finally make your mind up, I still think the Z3 looks best in red despite now moving to a silver ///M.

I am sure Bill will help you out but when you seriously start looking then I am more than happy to come along to some viewings and cast a critical eye over any potential purchases, I'm only in Wakefield so not far away.

Hi,

Mine is a 1997 2.8 pre-facelift on an R plate if you want to compare with the facelift while you're out and about. It is also pretty high milage.

Zed Carer is definitely the expert, I have only had mine about 7 months so still fairly clueless.

I am about 5 mins from Junction 27 of the M62, let me know if you want a look. I am happy to go for a run out (any excuse will do!). :coolsteer)

Thanks all.

Zed carer - I've emailed you through the link there, let me know if it doesn't come through.

Wildeboy - Thanks also. if you want to send my your email or number I'll pop over sometime for a look, Batleys not far at all. Your car looks great too, taken at a CITP meet at Harewood house I bet!? I was probably there in mine.

Si-forks - Your right, that looks like it would have been just about ideal!

R.E. Seasonal price fluctuations, it doesn't actually affect me much seeing as I'll be selling on a 2 seat sports car anyway, the value of which will climb a touch in the next few months also.

Aceman - Good to know there's some other mechanically minded enthusiasts about too, as said, I'm fine with most things myself its just different cars have their own special tricks don't they...!

This was the car I looked at in case your interested, like i say I reckon its strong money and without driving it or looking at a few i'll reserve judgement, but it did seem tidy.

I'll say one thing - the standard, non-sport seats are bloody awful!

For a moment I thought that you'd found my ideal Z3. I spent 6 months trying to find a pre-facelift, twin Vanos M52TU, Montreal Blue with a black interior but this one has the black beige - still having taken my dashboard, seats and centre console out I could change the interior. :D

Zed Carer I am so looking forward to meeting you \m/ with my Montreal Blue 2.8 (wrong interior for you) but I just know I shall find out what I bought in my naivety. I have no idea about half the stuff I see on here! so looking forward to learning about the cars! It will be great to find out what is bad and change it I get so much fun from it already that as I get used to her and fix what I do not even know is wrong the fun factor will just climb and climb! :-bd

PM Sent.

Yes it was CITP at Harewood last year, I think there were about 15 or so zeds there.

Most people say photos don't do their cars justice, mine looks much better in the photos!

Just to update fortunately snotrag came round on Friday when it was dry and sunny. He has written up his thoughts on his original Pistonheads post HERE. It looks like some others are starting to look at Z3's.
