Hello folks. I've been having some issues with my rear left passenger brakes overheating.

Last week I serviced the callipers, changed my disks, pads and shoes on the rear. The car passed it's MOT on Wednesday but after driving back home, I found the problem worse than ever, actually smoking. Investigating it this morning shows that it was the shoes, rather than the pads that were rubbing. (Previously the problem was the pads / calliper). Weirdly, when I rotate the disk by hand, I can feel it dragging slightly on the shoes, around a quarter of the rotation and free on the rest. (Calliper off)

I've measured the fitment of the shoes with the other side and they look identical. I refitted the old disk and the dragging symptom is the same.

Any advice would be appreciated.

One other thing, when I pull the handbrake lever, only one shoe appears to move on either wheel, is this normal?

Z4 Did your latch the cable tensioner behind the handbrake lever befor adjusting the shoes at the wheels, sounds like it's over adjusted the shoes. Latch the cable tensioner then back the wheel adjuster off
Z3 back the cable adjuster off then adjust at wheel end ensure mechanism is not seized in the drum adjust shoes then back off before making fine adjustment at lever end of cables

As said incorrect adjustment of shoes / cables could cause this also is the cable pivot mechanism ( at shoes ) free and not partially seized.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I loosened the nuts to the end of the bolts before starting the adjustment sequence at the hubs and then tightened them to take up the cable slack.

I'm wondering if there's an imperfection / warping of the plate that the disk sits against?

Hi Stephen, would this also explain why only one shoe moves when the lever is pulled?

Best guess is one of the handbrake cable outers is broken and the inner cable is sticking.

Tony.
