Great day ......... Terrible end

Was out visiting friends yesterday .......
Had a great day the sun was shining so roof down all the way
They live about 25 miles away in the country
It was lovely going round the country roads in the Z so peaceful
We had a lovely meal at the end of the day
We left about 10 .........
Half way home a Monkjack deer came jumping over the small hedge right into our car .......
Alan put his brakes on but it was too late .......
The poor animal was in great pain it couldn't move
The car behind us nearly went into us ( the poor man was in shock )
He then drove off the van behind him stopped and the driver got out
He saw what had happened he was a farmer
He said their is only one thing to do and put the poor animal out of its pain
All I keep thinking about is the poor little Monkjack
But it happened so quickly we couldn't do anything about it

Always a shock when wildlife runs out in front of you, used to see this all the time when I lived in the country. Main thing is that there wasn't a bigger accident and everyone (except the Monkjack of course) is OK.

Got a cracked number plate but nothing that can't be put right
If only wildlife had road sense

We often see them around our area too Shelly, it's a shame but they often do what you would least expect. They dash across the road when there's no really apparent reason.

It's possible that's what makes them do it because you rarely see them except between dusk and dawn.

Sorry about this. Big problem over here. Many dealers hit deer coming into work. And the police have the guts to give the driver a ticket. Pennsylvania used to have 300 deer accidents a WEEK on Interstate 80 that goes across the state for about 360 miles. Frankie

It's not the drivers fault is it
The one we hit just jumped in front of us and we couldn't do anything about it

Oh no, poor little deer. Good luck that the farmer came along when he did. I was in shock when I hit an owl at night a few years ago, that was bad enough! I can't imagine what I would have done if one of those had run out at me. Glad you're both okay, could have been a lot worse.

Down in the Everglades they've constructed fences along the the main highways to prevent Alligators doing the same thing, but as they can't jump I guess a deer fence would need to be higher. When you go down US 1 to Key West there are fences to keep the Key Deer (which are a threatened species, apparently) off the highway but they're about 6ft high but there are also warning signs telling you that deer are present.

Sorry to hear this. On 4th May 2004 I hit a badger on a North Devon country road when I was out riding my motorbike.
Got myself a helicopter ride in the Air Ambulance to the Devon and Exeter Hospital strapped to a stretcher. I broke 3 ribs on my back where the ribs join my spine and wrote off my bike.
I was off work for 3 months but made a full recovery.
