F****** insurance companies

Sometimes i just dont get how they work. Having just phoned mine to get a renewal quote for my Z3 they confirmed back the car details. On their system they had it as a LHD, imported z3 with lowered suspension as opposed to a RHD uk spec on standard suspension. They also had me down as a delivery driver using the Z3 to drop stuff off. The result of the above to cock ups means ive been driving *technically uninsured* as they put it since i bought the car last october. The result of this....i now have no insurance, on a sunday when everything closed and i need to be at work for 6am tomorrow morning.

I just can not get my head around the way insurance companies work in the UK...... :-o
Over here, you do not have to 'renew' anything, unless you change companies.
For example, my ex gave me my Smart car back yesterday. One phone call (on a Saturday) and I was ready to go.
The British system seems archaic to me.

you dont have to do anything here if your new quote is ok and your not moving company.

Ok, but you do not get 'new quotes' over here, you insure the car with the company you want to use, and that's it, year in, year out.

the only thing on my paperwork is a ''BMW Z3 roadster imp'' line on there, i assumed that it was irrelevant until now. However i did call them back (after speaking to BMW + checking my v5 to find the car isnt imported as is obvious) to be told they they will have sent out a letter to me confirming its an import. When challenged on this (ive never seen it) and mentioning that even if it is an import from germany (as they stated) it wouldnt be registered as an import thanks to the EU they decided it must have been a system glitch and they re-instated my insurance. Despite the fact they will ahve charged me about £100 more than i should have paid and given me a coronary on a sunday afternoon they still seem to be the cheapest quote + their english customer service was very good (john from bangladesh just didnt grasp it) so i'll probably end up renewing with them.

small update:

recieved a call form the insurers earlier today asking if i'd sorted the import thing out. they accepted that maybe the car was a UK spec model but assured me that BMW didnt make a 2.8 in 1997, 2 managers later and they finally conceeded this point and then quoted me £6 more than last year. Seems the additional year of NCB (taking me to 2 years) counted for nothing. Bravo.

Have you tried another company? I was with Royal & Sun Alliance and they quoted me £506 to renew this year. Did some ringing round and got down to £245 with a Churchill multicar policy (I insure 3 cars altogether). I have 3 years NCB.

got a quote of £400 less from confused.com wont be renewing with them.
