You can get a local locksmith/auto electrician to sorted you a key an programme it.
Average price is between 120-140 and thats them coming to you and deleting all the keys you don't have from the cars security.

I have heard that only stealerships can do BMW keys. Is in not correct anymore?
Ive got a local key guy that says he can do it they extract the existing coding and re code a eprom chip with it.
The Ewes unit is removed from under the dash and this is read and programmed also to accept the new key.

Hmm, interesting, i'll try to talk to dealer first to see their price and then to key guys. I am getting worried to have only one key - if I lost it - it will be far more expensive to resolve.
My locksmith here does the keys for BMW as I just found out recently. They charge the equivalent of over £220. He has a programmer so hope I can save some $$ going right to his home as it's only a short distance from my friends' home in Winnipeg. He didn't have a chip to do it when he was lAst here unfortunetly! Is there no way to program one using the cars programs?? JIM
I tried getting a key from a car locksmith who has supplied keys for me before for other cars , he said it would be cheaper going to BMW so I got a new key from BMW and they give you instructions how to match to your car. It was between £170-180. You need to take your log book with you too.
I’d guess at not far short of £200 from BMW. And £120 ish from an independent.
It can be done yourself too with a £50 programming tool, a key cut mail order from a photo of your existing key, £10-£15 of donor key for the PCB and £5 for a new transponder.
It’s good fun doing a key, I’ve done several. But not viable for a 1-off.

Yeah, ordered it from locksmith for something like £100. What they do - they remove immobiliser unit from a car and code in a key chip from used key of donor vehicle, then just cut blank and install PCB into it.. So, in theory, there is another bimmer with same key somewhere
Mine cost £170 from my local BMW main dealer, this included them programming the key to the car. It was an interesting day as four of the mechanics came out to look at the car as they had never had a Z3 in to their workshop! To my mind though this is the sort of thing where the saving from a non-dealer is not worth the hassle and possible cock-ups.

I think it depends how competent your locksmith is and how much you protect the integrity of your car.
I would imagine a BMW dealer can do everything through the diagnostics port without removing the EWS and opening it up.
If you are doing it from home you need to unplug the EWS (after dismantling part of the footwell trim), remove the case, clean the conformal coating (lacquer) off the main chip pins and have a fight with the piggy-back chip connector to get a connection. It's possible a locksmith would need to do the same or he might have some sort of half-way house computer that allows him to just plug into the EWS after removing it without dismantling.
And yes for a one-off £170 is probably a better investment that £100 with a locksmith. It sounds very poor if a dealer is saying they can't do it.
I think I have done a total of 4 keys for a cost of around £25-£30 each. So that's a big saving for me and I'm happy enough with the process. In fact it's good fun and it's a nice sense of achievement when you've finished a key, you're testing it and it opens/closes a car and fires it up!
I have seen higher prices than £170 quoted from a main dealer. And for that matter up to £150 from a locksmith. I think the lowest price I've seen from someone is ebay for about £80 but I'd struggle to trust someone to do that. And of course you need to remove the EWS yourself and send it off.
Whoever sorts the new key out has more than enough data to clone your key and chip without needing the key itself at a later date.
