Can anybody explain all the codes on the plate in the engine bay for me.
Not sure it will ever be of much use but you never know :)

Yep. I can. You will just have to wait until I return to my office where I keep all my literature.

Appreciate the info

So, the e*1*98 blah blah is the European Type Approval for this model.
314/3 is your colour code (hellrot) in this case so you can order touch up paint.
1.0 is the headlight tilt max angle
And in the top 28/s/2 is your engine type.
Also from your chassis number we ca see that this is an 08/99 roadster and being a WBA it is not an M model

2/122/136 is the sticker part number.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
I'm hopefully going to spend a bit of time fettling on my Z3 before I put her back on the road in April.
I suspect I'll be on here a fair bit for technical tips, or just inspiration.
I definitely have the infamous 'judder' from the prop shaft/diff, on gear change but as of now its not too bad.
I know I'll have to attend to it sooner or later but that may be a step too far for me as I haven't worked on my own vehicles in years.

GDavis I hope you don’t mind me tacking my question onto this informative thread:
Do any of our learned members know where the data plate/sticker is located on Japanese market Z3’s?
My car doesn’t have one in the engine bay on the right front wing, and I’ve also seen a lot of pictures online of other Z3’s with no sticker/plate in that location. Some I’ve seen have data plates/stickers in the LH aft door jamb - not this car.
All I have is the VIN stamped above the firewall, and a VIN tag that I accidentally found upon removal of the JDM number plate surround…but no data plate/sticker as such.

Ok team being super thick here but where else can you confirm that you have the M52TUB28 engine rather than the M52B28? I presume I got a M52TUB28 with a build date of 11/98 and an engine code of 28 6s 2 but I just need to check that I have all the correct bits before I start contemplating the M54 manifold swap (ZShed perhaps????)

If I recall right, the difference is single or double Vanos?

The last 7 digits of your vin in the realoem app will give you the exact results.

As Tony says the M52B28 is single vanos and fitted in 2.8 prefacelift cars.
The M52TUB28 is twin vanos and was fitted in very late prefacelift and all facelift 2.8 cars.
The photo shows the M52TUB28 twin vanos engine. If yours isn't like this it must be the M52B28 single vanos

Now I am confused, which photo are you referring to ?
By 'the photo' do you mean the pic in the Jack Rat post ? I assume you do ?
