Its easy to see why there is a trend in the USA Z3 fleet of removing the mechanical fan and run only with the 2 stage electric pusher fan that's already installed.

Ancient topic really Muzza, when I worked at a Chrysler garage back in the late 70's we had to modify Avengers and Sunbeams by removing the belt driven fans and replacing the with electric fans as they realised back then how much HP they needed to drive them. Fan delete threads are on here.

I love this sort of stuff. BMW solution was the best of a bad lot. I don't know why they didn't go down the electric fan route. It could be because electrics can fail without you noticing - that's why I've fitted a manual override to my van. When I'm stuck in traffic, I flick the switch.

I've been reading about fan deletion for a while and I can't see why anyone should pay more than £50 to do the job - famous last words.

I've just got to visit the local scrappy and get an air-con fan to fit in my car along with an 88 deg thermo switch - I've been meaning to do it for ages.

The N52 Si engine I have in the Z4 uses an electric water pump to reduce engine load. so BMW did eventually start thinking about reducing load, but the electric pumps are around £200+, rather than £50 for the older style.
