What are members' thoughts on car engine braking?
Does use of engine braking have consequences on:

1. engine
2. clutch
3. or any other car parts
4. whether petrol or diesel car

Dont really know about the consequences, but I was taught to drive using the gears back in the day when brakes were rubbish (unlike nowadays where kids are taught to coast to rounabouts on the brakes ) and still do, dont use the brakes much and never had any issues. I even use the manual overide to downshift in my auto Mazda just cant break the habit I guess.:)

I understand engine braking uses more fuel.
I was taught to use it to.

No idea on the pros and cons but like others I was taught to use the engine to slow down years ago. Still double down the box today for my own amusement and keep off the brakes unless I need them.

But my car is petrol
It will not use any fuel when coasting in gear as the drive is keeping the engine running, when coasting with the clutch dipped the engine requires a small amount of fuel to keep running.
