Anyone ever tried this?
I made a home kit out of some bits of scrap that I had lying around to restore some of the bits removed during the rear end clean up before I apply paint.
Tried using a wire wheel as well as a poly abrasive disc on an angle grinder and flap discs, but the wire wheel (drill attachment) takes too long in my opinion and the other two are great but wear out too quickly, the poly abrasive disc had worn down completely after 15 minutes or so.
All I needed for this setup was something with a lot of metal to use as sacrificial piece - chose to use an old brake disc, a battery charger (already had a cheapie silverline one I bought for the corsa) and some soda crystals (sodium carbonate).
The parts go in looking really rusty and some like the fuel tank straps had already been hit with a wire wheel but the rust just wouldn't budge.
3 hours in this barrel and here are the results - really, really clean, some surface rust left but undoubtedly will come off if left in for longer.
They've gone back in the tank for now and will stay in there for the next couple of days. Maybe less depending on how excited I get.
The smaller bracket went in initially but fell of when I carried the tank inside and I didnt realise so that too has gone back in.
Half of my anti roll bar also went in and again, really inpressed with the results, all the rust came off with ease after 3 hours in the tank.
The surface of the anti roll bar is completely smooth, ready for some paint. The other half has gone into the tank now.

Heres a better picture showing the anti roll bar when it came out the car (to get an idea of the corrosion levels)
Long thread but I was impressed by this process, how simple it is and how effective it can be so long as you're not too worried about how long it will take! So thought I would share.
Will keep you posted with results.
