See plenty of these and sadly, like this one, many are in a poor condition. The roof is dirty and mouldy. The rear wings are bubbling with rust over quite a big area. Rust around the boot lock, etc, etc.

I wonder why our Zs are prone to rust?

Actually they're not Dawn. Unlike the MX5 s of the late nineties to early two thousands the zeds of the same time are far better . Rust on a Z3 or Z4 is down to neglect whereas rust on a MX5, MR2 or MGF is likely no matter what.

I’m thinking of the cills in particular on Z3s which rust and is very common. Why is this?

In terms of the other cars, funnily enough I had a MGF which proved mechanically problematic yet rust-free.

I don’t think the MGF is anywhere near as bad for corrosion as early 90’s Japanese cars, but where the Jap cars were mechanically bullet proof the MGF sadly were not. Corrosion on Z4 is not especially common and I suspect bubbling on rear wheel arches is probably from a very poor body repair, maybe the same round boot lock.

Yes, the MGF is less prone to rust than the Mazda and Toyota, but generally the BMWs are better.

So why do the cills rust? It has to be something to do with the design.

All vehicles have their Achilles heel Dawn. When you consider the age of these cars see if you can find an original MX5 or MR2 in anywhere near as good condition as a Z3.

I had 3 Z3 s and none had rusty sills, infact no rust anywhere of significance. My MX5 had rust everywhere although it was newer.

On my 1990 Eunos I had to replace the whole of the right hand side of the car floor, inner and outer sill and rear wheel arch. When I sold it the N/S was getting ready for the same.
