XCAR compares two of the best M3 models ever built: E30 M3 vs M3 GTS.
First, we have the iconic E30 M3, one of those rare cars that excites all car enthusiasts. Based on the 1986 model year E30 3-Series, the first M3 was introduced with a 2.3 L I4 S14B23 engine. The engine design was based on various BMW genealogy; basic block layout from the M10 4 cylinder (found in the 2002 and 320 series) overbored and reinforced to similar specifications of the BMW M88 inline-6.
When the E30 M3 was in its final years of top level competition, the 2.5 liter S14 engine in full race trim was capable of over 340 hp (250 kW) naturally aspirated.
The M3 GTS launched in summer of 2010 and the limited edition model builds atop the popular BMW M3 Coupe. The new racing-oriented M3 was made available to European customers only. The 150 units went to private owners, racing companies or tuners, and we expect to see some of these cars in upcoming races.
The BMW M3 GTS produces 450 horsepower.
In addition to a larger and more powerful V8 engine, exclusive tuning of the 7-speed M Dual Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic and modified suspension technology.
The BMW M3 GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 4.4 seconds. The car reaches the 1000 metre mark from a standstill in just 22.5 seconds. Top speed is 305 km/h.
