In September this year the government will introduce E10 petrol to replace E5 classic cars built before 2002 will not run on this fuel it has 10%more bio fuel E5 will now be super unleaded at a higher cost as E5 will be phased out
Can I have your opinion on the impact this will have on our z3 and the wider classic cars
You can enter your car on the government Web site to see if your car will run

Just checked, says shouldn't be an issue for BMW engines of any age, just ensure we put in the required Octane fuel, according to .gov

scare story?

BMW
All petrol engine BMW models are cleared for the use of E10 petrol regardless of their year of manufacture but the minimum octane required should be observed according to the owner's manual.

I'm still not sure if my vehicle is E10 compatible
If you're not sure if you can use E10 in your vehicle:
  • check the vehicle owner's manual, the instructional booklet is specific to your vehicle
  • look inside of the fuel filler flap
  • ask the car, motorcycle or scooter manufacturer
If you're still not sure, use E5 petrol. It will still be available in the super grade at many filling stations.

E5 is 5 % bioethanol - standard unleaded atm.
E10 is 10% bioethanol - what will become the new standard unleaded.

E10 can possibly damage fuel lines, as well as seasl and plastics - it can also cause problems with catalytic converters.
Its less efficient, so performance will drop and wont give the same mpg - in shrot you'll use more and not get the performance.
It can also hold more water in solution as ethanol is hydroscopic,

These are the basics choice is yours but I know what I'll be using.

Yep me too Andy, super unleaded in all its guises will still be E5 but no more than that.
They say cars after 2011 are compliant, and most after 2002 are also. Personally I wouldnt trust it, in an older car, as the damage it could possibly do will far outway the higher cost of E5.

E10 is already in common use throughout large parts of Europe.

Most forecourts won't have facility to have E5 95 and 97+ octanes and E10 although E5 will still be available - you might have to search for it.
For most of us, E10 will result in slightly higher fuel consumption (and so cost) but still less carbon emissions. Cars pre-2002 may have potential engine wear and damage issues and will so need more care. For some where their car is the daily, that will cause some concern.

Change is inevitable. It has been coming for several years now.
Remember the move to unleaded?
Same level of panic and concern. Just then we didn't have this internet thingamabob to discuss it on. We didn't also have cars that survived more than 5 years before descending into pile of rust on your driveway.

I thought that the E5 will be in 97+ octane only rather than both 95 and 97+ . As you say not all garages will stock it but should be fairly widely available, you may find more people switching to it.

Yes I had overlooked that, but at vastly higher cost of 97+ octane most won’t want that much greater expense. For weekend cars it’s less of an issue. Indeed many already use it even though the fuel itself isn’t generally needed although the additives to have some benefit on engines, especially single injection ones. Indeed, the higher volatility of the E10 fuel means it degrades more quickly so isn’t recommended for leaving in cars left for longer periods. So E5 97+ for every Zed daily or not.

If you discount the Clio and Imprezza and just compare the Golf GTi to the Z3 2.2 you gain 5bhp and 16 Torques.

The 2.8 3.0 and ///M would be better still.

For those with an Imprezza type car, 15bhp 🚀

The problem will probably not be when the car is running, but when it is stored. E10 doesn't last as long as E5. So a car that has 12 month old fuel in it may not be very happy when it gets started.

So the moral of that story it if you're going to stand your car for a while don't leave much fuel in it?

Tony.

Interesting I was always told if car or boat was being laid , make sure tank is left full of best petrol.

Maybe from 50 years ago when petrol was petrol. These days it isn't.

If it's full, you reduce the risk of fire, as there is no room for vapours.

I've just read that filling the tank will help with E10 as well.

One of the issues is that it is hygroscopic - it absorbs water.

If the tank is filled, there is less opportunity for the water vapour to be absorbed.
