Hello everyone,

After some advice, have to deliver a motor to Limoges next week.

Paying at the tolls in a right hand drive car?

Do you have to get out and walk round to the toll booth to pay?

Tim

toll roads in France are very good, you will make very good time on them, and there not that expensive, ok there not free but the hassle free clear driving makes up for it.

Did limoges run a few years ago, once on my tod. Toll booths that are on the left side only are easily reachable from inside your car. Stop, window down, belt off and reach over. Doddle and no need to get out of the car.

Ah great, thank you.

I hear stories about the French Police targeting UK cars, did you find this at all?

Although I'll be cruising at 60mph in a Landcover so certainly won't be speeding.

As long as you drive with the flow you'll have no problem, just remember to heed the speed limit if it's raining, 110KPH will be 90KPH for example, it's all sign posted. I've had no dramas with Police shadowing me.

BTW not all tolls (very few in fact) have payment on both sides.. done the run to the Haute-Vienne south of Limoges many times.

Make sure you have your France kit, bulbs, triangle Hi vIz (in the car not the boot) etc also even though you don't legally need breathalysers the cops have been know still to issue tickets for not having them. Also beware the speed limits between dry and wet conditions are different and this is the biggest issue of tickets to foreign drivers.

You must have arms like Twizzle, Andy, (60s kiddies TV programme, for you young ones who don't know what I'm talking about) We have been through umpteen tolls in our time in France and I have a job reaching from the passenger side! Mind you, Mike has a habit of giving the booths as wide a berth as he does other cars in car parks:rolleyes:

there is a much simpler technique for paying tolls in rhd car. it was demonstrated in I think, the Gumball Rally movie,

1. wind down drivers window
2. extend right arm, with coins in hand, out of window
3. throw coins over roof in general direction of hopper.
4. if you miss and run out of coins, get out of car, pick up coins and walk to hopper!

On a more serious note, toll booths all take credit cards. Easier than messing with coins.

Speeding.
Never been targeted by french police whilst driving in a GB car.
I got a camera ticket in an FR hire car last year down near Antibes. It arrived in uk by post about a month later. Mates were most impressed i'd got a ticket with 115 on it! (km/h of course). Still living down the fact i was driving a Hyundai though..

Are you likely to speed in a "Land Slowver?"

A lot of tills are automated now. We travel France most years and I think for a driver on his own a tag would be a good idea. Be easier than reaching across or having to get out. We went through four either way last year and two failed to take the payment. There's a button to press to speak to someone which we did and paid at the next station both times. No problem as Jue was with me. Would have been a bit of a pain on my own. And as all ready stated above, you must carry, a hi-viz, set of bulbs, breatherlizers, warning triangle and first aid kit.
Putting all that aside, your delivering a car to France for work! Lucky man! Go enjoy yourself!

Drove that route a fortnight ago,it's a bit of a haul, tolls are easy, it's your timing around Paris that can be a bit of a lottery 2.5 hours from Calais in a land rover try not to hit rush hour .And on the way back ignore the satnav just follow the signs for Lille it will take you the quickest and simplest way around Paris,I've tried a few ways ance ending driving up and down the trocidero and ending up under the Eiffel Tower .You will pick up the signs for Lille as soon as you leave the autoroute they take you almost back to Calais.bon voyage

Thanks for all the advice chaps, at least I know what to expect now.

Ferry is Newhaven to Dieppe so will be avoiding the roads around Paris.

Electronic toll collection is great, the only problem arises from the hire car companies who rip people of for the use of the transponders in the cars.
These knocked 2 hrs off the trip from the Florida Keys up to Orlando through not having to stop and pay tolls ,speed up again and pass all the trucks which sped through on the E-pass lanes. Definitely saves fuel too!

Tony.

Thanks again for all the tips/advice.

Just got back home.

I did have to get out three times for the tolls, no bother though, the French drivers just laugh at you.

What I did learn though is the hotel, and B&B I stayed in don't change the sheets. It's a habit of mine that I always pull back the sheets to check, found hairs in the bed on both occasions.

Other than that I found it pleasant driving in France, the roads are quieter than I expected.
