LGetting the door cards off is really not a hard job but getting them to seat back down at the top is tricky and this is the result of someone who obviously forced it down at the top. This is what I found when removing to see why it didn't look straight when on. Wish I'd left it cos it really didn't look that bad.

Nothing much wrong from this angle???????

This has been damaged with the kind of force only hammering could achieve.

Now I've tried glueing and clamping and hoping I can achieve an edge that will go back down along the side window.

If this doesn't work I'll try a thin length of plastic to reform a decent edge. Been clamped for 8hrs so far and shall leave it for 24hrs. Fingers crossed.

Rha, Roy.

Hope it works good for you mate. I watched a YouTube video of a guy taking the door cards off a Z4 last night, and he explained it very well, regarding which direction to lever and pull to release the clips, etc. I have removed them before at work on a Z4 but didn't really appreciate the subtle differences you need to apply.

Good luck with the repair mate.:)

Tony.

HT your up late?????
Hope your right but mine are black and beige so if I do have to change it I'll have to try and remove the Black original leather to transfer it, nothing's ever straight forward in this word it seems.

I'd buy a second hand pair @Rha if I were you. It's good to experiment and to see if you can rescue a butchered part but you'll always know it's there.

Get some leather dye, it's dead easy to apply and it looks like OEM

Retired last month, all the time in the world.
Joking aside about the colour, I think your repair looks good and should not cause a problem when back on the door.

Thanks for the confidence JR but when I've done with it it'll be better than new the way BMW should have done it in the first place.=))

My right side, or passenger side has a door handle missing on the '96 1.9. I purchased replacements for both sides as they are a bit different that the originals. I will watch your thread closely as I might be in the same boat. I'll make sure to check u-tube before starting the work as you did. Frankie

Well it's back on and it turned out that I repositioned the black plastic piece top right just out of line and the fit is not 100%, but it's solid and I'm happy for now.
Couple of pics to show.

Did put some good duck tape just along the repaired edge just for peace of mind, but I reackon the repaired edge is now stronger than the rest.
Lesson to be learned, I've had the Z for nine yrs in May and the door card really didn't look that bad all this time, so @FRANKIE "if it ain't broke don't try and fix it.:stop:.=))"

One day when the weathers warmer Ant I'll take it off and put it right, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to work on a car out in the cold, the lockup is too narrow to work inside, I've used a 1/4 tank jumping in and out to stay warm.
Good job I treated myself to the interior tool kit, makes life much easier.
