I highly suggest anyone doing electrical troubleshooting obtain the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual for their exact year and model of car. BMW NA made them for all US models and BMW AG made them for many the others, as well: http://www.wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm

I frequently use these manuals. They are very useful. But unless you have the right electrical background quite often they need a lot of interpretation and patience to follow through, not to mention learning of how to diagnose on the car.

But I'm definitely no electrician and have got there in the end with all the jobs I've tackled.

sorry, this is a simple owner's manual does not cover the car systems well.
