Dealing With Rust

Hi all,

Need some advice on how to treat and cover areas like this - of which I have many. The eventual plan is to get the car vinyl wrapped... Will have to leave it looking like a patch work quilt till then.

So whats the best way to go about this. Need some guidance on what stuff to buy, sand paper grades etc. I've got a pot of Kurust already...

If I had the cash that would be what I would do. Just need to stop the rot for now before it gets too bad.

At the next car show, take some tools with you and when no one is looking swap the panels with another car (BMG's looks like a candidate )

The only way is to strip it right back to see whether it is surface or full panel rust, then you can attack as required sanding, cutting the rust out. I have been to several body shops with the new panels for my wide body conversion and they all say silver is a dog to match up, including Fuzz Townshend. I did get quotes of between 150 and 250 quid per panel which is not bad, but I can have a whole Respray for between 1200 and 1500 quid. I ave opted for the later and sve just treated the rust areas by rubbing down and painting in to last me 6 months till I book in for full Respray.

When I book t in I will be providing two new front qtr wings as they are only 40 quid new, and mine are like yours on the corner and it is full panel rot, so not worth repairing.

It is worth taking the panels off periodically though, they are only bolt on, as you can then waxoyl and underseal the panels and infrastructure. Note the box sections beneath the sills have two grommets for and aft, which are there to insert a waxoyl probe.

I must admit it hadn't entered my mind it would be any thing more than surface rust Guess I will have to get some sanding paper and see what's underneath.

Removing the panels is a good idea, although I hope nothing nasty underneath either.

The underneath will be fine, mine was still perfect after 15 years, so just needed the dirt cleaning off and the re-application of waxoyl and underseal, best to do the rear of each panel as well, and inside the box sections.

The order for removal is:

1) rear and front arch liners
2) front wings
3) rear bumper
4) rear wings
5) side rockers (sills)

Refitting is a reversal, it took me in total a full day to do mine, but spread over four days, and is all bolts and clips,
