Cruise Control

I just purchased (this week) a low mile 2001 Z3 Roadster 2.0
All things considered, I cannot believe there is no factory installed cruise control.
Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket cruise control that can be added or installed?

It is an option that can be retrofitted and was available from new. Depends on what year model you have and if it has fly by wire throttle or conventional cable. Bits are available for both still from BMW, or you can scavenge the parts of eBay. Fitted it to my 2002 2.2 face lift using parts from a US E36 M3.

If you have fly by wire throttle there is a full write up in the Article section off the main menu.

Apparently you don't need fly by wire as the ACS is involved, not sure if this is correct though, I think it was @Murray Wall pointed this out in another thread,

If you have "fly by wire", its just a matter of obtaining the column switch and it's " plug and play". Had this done to my 2001 MC some years ago. Alternatively, you need all "the bits" and its more involved (but only a couple of hours work for someone who has done it previously). Had this done to our E36 convertible a couple of years ago. Fortunately, our Z3 had it factory installed. Either way, its only a £200 job (max) with sourced parts and well worth doing.:)

Can it be retrofitted to a 97 M44, if so what's required, anyone done this before?

It's dead easy, tricky part is locating an E36 column switch, the US seem to have plentyfull supplies as cruise was a standard fit over there but shipping can be expensive! but it's the same switch for left or right drive.
Then you need the interface module which plugs in between the switch and the wiring loome under the dash. The module is a BMW part @ about £48 and you should find a column switch for about £30.

Hi

There is always a bit of confusion about where the delineation is between the pug and play Cruise Control and the extra throttle actuator cruise control. Its best sorted using your engine type:
- M43/M44 you need the extra throttle actuator control system. Easy to do, just need more parts. E36's are the usual donors

- M52 single VANOS engines, you need the extra throttle actuator control system. Like the M44, the E36's are the usual donors

- M52TU duel VANOS engines. Plug and play, source the cruise control column stick and the small control module and plug it all in.

- M54 duel VANOS engines. Plug and play, source the cruise control column stick and the small control module and plug it all in.

Hope this helps

Regards

Murray

After talking to @Jjim then @Faheem today about this very thing .
Maybe someone can shed some more light my zed is a facelift car with a m43 engine and @Jjim has a pre facelift car with a m44 engine.
This is what we discovered after looking at them
My m43 engine needs the double cable throttle body but the m44 has it.
My facelift car has the multiplug for the control motor cable tied back onto the main loom at the fusebox.
The m44 does not appear to have this
The loom that comes out the fuse box down the passenger inner wing definitely different.

Thanks guys, t's like being in a room full of Wizzards. But, it's all Greek to me thus far.
I've been looking around on E-Bay and there seems to be an abundance of units available, just a matter of finding the right one and someone to help with the install. :)
