A couple of weeks ago I was fixing the shrunken leather on the dash, had the instrument cluster removed and noticed that some bulbs were missing. Put a bulb in the cruise control warning light to see if it would work (2.8 Facelift Z3 M52/TU with retrofitted cruise control). As I have subsequently read it didn’t light up.
Driving to Zedfest yesterday the CC wouldn’t engage. The ABS light was on, it occasionally throws codes for the front sensors and pump that will need to be fixed. I assumed the CC wouldn’t engage because of the ABS warning light.
Returning home this afternoon no ABS light and a 50mph average limit, couldn’t engage CC again by moving the stalk forward or backwards, pushed it down to see if it would reset. The CC light lit up and I could set the speed and accelerate/decelerate as normal. The light toggles on or off if I move the stalk up or down.
The only reason I can think of is that last week I fitted a 3.0 manifold with a Remapped ECU from Digital-Tuning.co.uk and this behaviour is coded.
Bottom line, I now have a Z3 with a working cruise control light.

Hmmm, think I’ll put a bulb in mine now… 👍
I was hoping someone with the same setup would try a bulb as well. I’ve convinced myself the CC now works differently because the ECU has been reprogrammed. The base file could possibly be from a later model BMW, a 3 series with a M52 or 54 maybe? Not an expert on this sort of thing.

Put a bulb in (2001 3.0 drive by wire) no luck, I'll take it to work later and try again....

Just tried again. Nothing. Never mind I now have a spare bulb!

I know this is a year old but I would like to know what ECU parameter toggles the CC light… I used my revmatch tuned DME for a bit and loved the working CC light, but the tube was trash… so now I’m just tuning my own DME and can’t figure out what sentence controls the light lol

I tried all sorts to get my newly fitted bulb to work but it wouldn't. (M52TU 2.8 with 3.0 manifold upgrade).
I even looked for outputs from the interface, and different voltages or earths appearing on the tracks of the instrument cluster.

However I did find a light that works when using the roof button which helps in fault finding whereabouts a problem may lie depending if it lights up or not when the rood doesn't open:

Mine works as described in my previous post. No idea why other than it must be due to the ECU change in some way.

So in tunerpro I changed the cruse main switch parameter from 1 to 0, in the assumption that the ecu I got from revmatch (it’s locked so I can’t read it) is tuned from a non-Z m54b30 platform- I haven’t uploaded it to the car yet, doing a Magnaflow exhaust later this week. I’ll let you know what happens.

The cruise control operation in post #1 is as per the E46 platform. Since the Z3 shared a lot of DME's and engine's with the E46, the tuner probably coded it to the E46 style.
