Hi All
Eventually got around to pricing up a front bumper / bonnet respray to finally get rid of all the stone chips. Got fed up of touching up the areas and the car looking like it was suffering from chicken pox.
Am awaiting a quote.
Has anyone recently had these areas resprayed? What price range should I be looking at?
Any ideas much appreciated

Cheers

I do this for a living, depending on how much damage there is it would be in the region of £550 + VAT with us but some body shops will charge double that.

There’s a bargain basement place in Swansea I keep meaning to try. I’ve seen their work and it’s very good. I’d expect them to be £400-£500 and no VAT.

But there aren’t many places around like that. And they may as yet do a cr*p job.

So I think Sean’s guide is a fairer lower end price indication.

By and large, the cost of materials is equal for all. The major cost in this work is man hours. I think my question would be how many man hours will the body shop apply to the job x hourly rate?

'Word of mouth' is my view. I recently had a job done on my boot and got various quotes up to near £500. The highest quote came from a body shop where someone I know had work done, he wasn't very complimentary about the job. A garage owner I know recommended a chap who worked for a prestigious local body shop, but has now set up on his own. Result; excellent job £150.

I paid £250 for front bumper alone, and it was not good..
I dont think price high or low is any indicator of the workmanship.

Word of mouth is best, but even then some have a bad day...its a lottery

anyone that says I need to blend it in, is one I avoid like the plague.
Colour matches can be achieved at the right places, even on cars of our age.

I’d never pay for a blend on a Z3.

On my daily car it’s different.

And I agree a recommendation is everything regardless of price.

I had my front bumper done plus some damage repaired on it along with the corner of the bonnet repaired and painted. The whole front bumper was painted and the side of the bonnet painted upto the ridge. You wouldn't tell on the bonnet, but the bumper had to go back in and be redone because he wasn't happy. Cost was £400.

A year or so later I wanted my Rieger lip done and he did the whole bumper and lip for £120 as he was never happy with the first job he did on the bumper. It lasted OK, I took it back last year for a refresh and they wanted £300 to repaint the bumper and lip so I left it. I bumped it in the snow earlier in the year the paint split like mad, it hadn't been prepped properly underneath so I won't be taking it back there I don't think. I fitted a spare bumper which I had that's actually in pretty good nick and repaired the splitter and have just painted it myself. I've still got the money aside to have the bumper and lip done but it doesn't really need it just yet. BMW wanted around £500 for the bumper and lip but they wouldn't give me a definite price and just messed me about.

I would say your looking at least £500+. Problem is until it's done you don't know what type of job your getting.

I paid £2400 for a full hit and it sank in 6 months and looked shocking. 2 forum members gave their time up to correct it for me. Looks great now.

Get recommendations from the people you get quotes from. If they are good they wont mind.

A big thanks for all the advice - @BMBabe , @Ianmc , @ZVictor1 , @gookah , @g8jka , @Grumps , @Paul Rice, @Sean d , @mrscalex , @5harp3y and others . Consensus is its about the quality and price should not be the main focus. Recommendations / word of mouth seems the way to go. I did have the boot resprayed 6 years ago and have been really pleased with it. I have got the quote from the same firm.

The following work needs to be done.
STRIP&REFIT BONNET /BUMPER ,
REPAIR CRACK BUMPER /CHIPS BONNET,
PREP&PAINT BONNET /BUMPER .
COST =
PAINT & MATERIALS 165.00
LABOUR 385.00
VAT@20% 110.00

Total Estimate Amount £ 660.00

Will have a look at recommendations for them

Thanks again for all your advice

Believe it or not the cost of materials changes dramatically across the board, top end of the lacquer scale can be up to £600 for a 5L pack and bottom end can be around £35, some tinters can be as high as £700 for 1L and some as low as £40

I have yet to find a body shop that will paint all colours edge to edge

Sounds like a fair price, any less and you should run a mile, never do cheap in a body shop
