It's official term is Hydrographics which is basically water transfer printing, Wikipedia do good description of the process.
There was a bit of story behind mine, I found a company in Poole just around the corner from were my previous office was and they said they could do this only to find they were having some internal issues and they had never done anything like this shape before! But they were up for the challenge and would promote this on their web site.
The console comes apart and is basically 3 x parts, it has like a plastic coating finish which mine being beige was peeling around the window switches which made it look tatty and annoying to no end hence why I went for this process rather than buying new bits. However, with the plastic coating it was a real bi*** to remove or to get the console prepared, that's the excuse I got, but it transpires these guys were still learning how to do the process and p***** me around to end, it's needs good preparation for the film to adhere. They originally quoted £100 but due to them potentially going bust and the time scale around of 8 weeks to complete and me complaining weekly, when I picked it up they offered to do it for free.
But me being me, I wanted some other bits done on the door cards, so paid a token £50 for the console, however when I took the door card bits in to be done, again got nothing but bullshit and they refused to do the work.
So sorry I cannot and would not recommend the company I used, but I know there are others out there who are no doubt a lot more professional than the idiots I delt with. The initial quote of £100 for the work I felt was reasonable, but if you only want the top & middle bits done it may be cheaper. I think there is another company in Wareham that carry this out, worth a Google!
I know mine is not to everybody's taste but I'm happy with the finish and I personally wanted a lighter shade of wood grain. They make loads of colour films so you could personalise it to your own taste.
I hope this helps
Andy.
