I was driving along today, in a bit of a rush and I had a traffic signal camera go off twice.

I went through an amber so I'm not worried about that.

But there was no one behind me as I looked in the rear view mirror.

I don't know how fast I was going unfortunately. Do these cameras have speed sensors in them too?

No lines on the road to indicate the region in which the camera would operate.

My insurance is already well above 4 grand, I can't image what it would be if I had 3 points on my license....

I'm afraid some do indeed have a calibrated speed camera built in. They take all the sport of of the chase.

Yup, got done by one on a roundabout. Went through on an amber, but got done for being 5mph over the speed limit. Never occurred to me that they record speed as well!

Looks to be a Peek camera

"Peek Speed Cameras use either embedded magnetic stripes or piezo electric devices within the roads surface to calculate the speed of a vehicle as it passes over them or Radar like the Gatso.

Peek Speed Cameras are also accompanied by lines on the road similar to the Gatso type cameras. The most popular in the UK is the Radar which is similar in design to a rear facing Gatso using a normal double-flash. It is still possible to see Peek Speed Cameras in use but they are becoming rare."

I mean how many metres does the camera usually pick up within. There weren't any white lines and I was about 60metres away from the camera at the point it flashed.

More exotically called the Peek Traffic: Traffiphot III G Piezo Sensor

These cameras monitor the traffic signals. They are positioned between twelve and twenty metres before the stop line. The state of the signals is monitored and the device is 'armed' when the red light is illuminated. When a vehicle crosses the stop line against the red light it passes over loops situated under the road surface just past the stop line. This triggers the camera, which takes two photographs. One is taken immediately and one a second later to show the passage of the vehicle through the signals. The date and time of the offence, together with the time which elapses after the red light is illuminated, are recorded on to the film. The camera also records data regarding the amber light so that the correct sequence of the lights can be proved. In addition the camera monitors the speed of vehicles as they cross the stop line.
