Well having just walked in my home after being at work all day. I’ve received a letter from the AA politely advising me the my breakdown cover will be going up from £12 a month to £26.50 per month for the cover I currently enjoy that I’ve never used.
My question is who do you use if any and what are you paying. I’m not being tight but I refuse to pay more for breakdown than it cost me to insure the car.

Carl

I fell out with the AA about 30 years ago when a patrolman wouldnt let me borrow two 10mm spanners for about 2 minutes to fix my exhaust. I had driven from Mid Wales through the night and managed to get to a garage in Maidenhead with a broken exhaust before I could do a temporary repair.
I currently use Start Rescue, with a two car policy, and the main criteria is national recovery............luckily never had to use the service yet!!!

Usually if you challenge the increase or mention using another breakdown service, they reduce it significantly.
Had the same thing with R.A.C, ended up adding my daughter to the policy for free and dropped the price to the original, when I questioned the increase.

That’s what I’m now looking at through my bank too
I'm with the RAC Carl. Used it today :(. We have it through our bank and that includes the lot including homestart. We pay £18 but that also has full travel insurance and airport lounge as well.

I did try that Steve but when the lady kept telling I was still getting a great deal at the new price I just said look if that’s how you feel just cancel it and I’ll look elsewhere.

I am with Autoaid , I saw them on Money Saving Expert and at the time sign up for 12months get 3 months extra free , the reviews weren't to bad , if you breakdown call them up and a local garage comes out , they have home start , you can claim overnight expenses if stuck overnight , get you home and other benefits ,cost was £42 , this covers me for any car I own (2) and any car I am a passenger in.
Of course the test is when you need them and touch wood so far I haven't needed there services
The other option is to phone the AA threaten to leave and negotiate a better deal

We have full RAC cover including Eurocover through our Barclay's Bank account. The Eurocover proved invaluable when my car blew up whilst driving through Belgium 18 months ago now. They provided me with a hire car and shipped my car back to my home in Truro. We only pay around £12 a month and that includes travel insurance too. We've had the cover for a few years now and we wont be changing anytime soon.
As far as I'm aware we don't get our payments reviewed either so we're more than satisfied with the deal we have.

Wow, that's some price increase.

I've just taken out a new policy with the AA

£149.50 for the year.

For two people, any car, or just being a passenger, nationwide recovery, but not the home start.

I think the AA are the only ones to cover cars over 16 years old, but happy to be corrected on that.

Towards the end of the year I'm going to be looking at a Nationwide account that gives AA cover, travel insurance, and family phone insurance, for £15 per month.

Agree Andy -have recently changed to them - £19/month. If you have a joint a/c both of you are covered - travel cover is world wide up to 80 years of age.
I keep reading the paperwork looking for the catch! ;)

Another recommendation for GEM Motoring Assist. It got the highest rating in a recent Which magazine survey, covers any car you are driving, even classics, and has a recovery service on one truck, not by relay like the AA. Their average response time was only 40 minutes. I was with RAC for years but the price kept going up. By switching to GEM I halved my annual premium.
