Hello, just wondering if any breakers have a protection plate that sits behind the brake discs for the front.

Mine was rattling some time ago and ideally I would have removed the calipers, discs and stuck a washer between the bolt to stop it rattling, however, not knowing how expensive they were I decided to rip mine out and planned to replace the pair at a later stage.

Have been quoted £34 from Sopers for one and £50 on ebay for two aftermarket ones.

If anyone is breaking a car I wouldn't mind a pair of these for a reasonable price. Thanks.

Chances are you will be buying something not much better than your old ones mate. I would bite the bullet and invest in some new ones. Even if aftermarket.:)

Cheers @t-tony I already put an order through for just one plate from Sopers (£34) but it just seems a little expensive for what it is. Originally wanted the pair so I'd replace both of them but the brake (upgrade) job is starting to sound costly. Did a sum of all the parts that I'll need to do the upgrade properly and the total amount it'll cost is the same as that of a front end respray!...or a really nice TV! oh what we do for our cars! =))

Im afraid you're almost certainly wasting your time. Most are very nasty by now. Not only rusted but they split too at the narrow point.

Are you aware the wheel bearing has to come off to replace these? Otherwise you have to cut them to slip them round.

Which is another reason they are not sold 2nd hand.

@mrscalex Hey Rob, I was under the impression that there isn't any need to remove the wheel bearing if the front plates need to be replaced, just pull off the discs and remove the plate. I thought it was just the rears where the bearing would have to be removed...

Can anyone confirm?

Ta.

The hub will have to be removed but the front will not be as bad as the rear as there is no drive just a stub axel.

The hub is what I would call the complete steering knuckle, shield and bearing assembly. So do you really mean the bearing will have to come off? And the bearings will then have to be replaced as they can't be put back I don't think.

The backplate is in a sandwhich between the steering knuckle and what I'm calling wheel bearing perhaps you're calling hub.

The point is can the spinny round part be taken off to get access to the backplate. That is remove the spinny part as a whole unit without requiring a new wheel bearing when you put it back.

The bearing will be pressed in to the hub it shold all remove as one hub and bearings to allow the plate to be be replaced the whole thing should bolt back on no need to replace hub or bearings.Apart they look like this.. .

As you can see the bearing is pressed into the hub so with a puller it should come off as a complete unit to allow the plate to be changed.

Ok good news. For some reason I thought the bearing was destroyed as the hub came off. So you just remove the nut, use puller and it comes off reusable?

You might even find it will come off without a puller. I pull on the flange with my left hand and tap the right side from the rear with a knocking stick. I use the same on Fiat rear wheel bearings where you need to remove the hub to fit brake shoes.

Glad to have learnt all this. I hate the condition those splash guards get in. So that will be going down on my list!

Thanks for this, very useful stuff, sounds a tad complicated compared to what I had in mine originally but will have to investigate further.

Only possible fly in the ointment might be the big socket and cracking bar needed to remove the front hub nut Faheem, not sure what size, possibly 36mm. Torque wrench for refitting the nut too?

I'll need a cracking bar anyway Tony as the bolt for the front calipers have seized and I can't afford an impact at the moment :( When I was attempting to remove/repair the dust shield originally I tried to use a normal socket with a 1/2 inch ratchet but I broke the socket (it cracked in multiple places - despite the socket feeling really well made) =))

I might have to book myself in at some point to visit the midlands z shed

I will probably invest in one soon Tony but don't know what to look for when buying a driver. I don't know if it's better to buy a new one off eBay that isn't a a big brand or pay the same amount for a second hand one made by bosch, dewalt and the likes. Unfortunately not my area of expertise. :(
