As a solution for corroded mirrors, you can buy a high strength plastic replacement for as either just the base or the whole unit from www.spiegel-z3.de (it is best to use a browser with automatic translation such as chrome, as it is in German)

The whole units (not incl casing) are €220 + P&P with the base colour coded to your Z.

He also sells an OEM quality luggage rack to be used with BMW fixings for €249.

The rack is the wrong way round. They are designed to stop items hitting the driver under heavy braking or in an accident. So the lip should point towards the front of the car.

Back to topic - Cracking find this is a common fault with the z3 mirror bases or if your better half has a vendetta against bins!

Just thought I would add that I converted my M mirrors from LHD to RHD using www.spiegel-z3.de €112 for painted bases and new column so that the mirrors fold perfectly, I posted the mirrors to Udo to fit the new bases and Udo even painted the mirrors to match!
