Part one of “Project Panther”

Back in 2007 I bought my first Z3 after months of hunting around trying to find one that took my fancy. I finally decided on a black 2001 2.2i Sport with black interior, what else could I do except name her “Panther”.

What followed was a few years of enjoyment with many days randomly cruising around with the roof down. Sadly I was made unemployed and money got tight, and Panther became rather neglected. She ended up abandoned off the road untaxed, with the hood starting to deteriorate, mould forming on the interior and an ever growing list of things needing to be done. To be honest it was getting a little depressing not being able to get her back to a driveable condition.

Fast forwards a couple of years to 6 months ago when I joined a Facebook group for UK BMW Z3 owners (at the time I didn’t know it was part of ZRoadster.org). So I joined and said hi, but wasn’t quite expecting everyone to jump in and start asking for pictures. This is something I’ve now learnt happens when you join car internet sites. Rather embarrassed I posted an old picture of Panther back when she was stunning, and then a few days later I admitted she was off the road in a rather sorry state.

It was a mixed blessing being on this group as all I could see was everyone having fun in their Zeds, meeting up, fixing, tinkering even just driving them. I gave more details as to what was wrong with the car, particularly the long list of broken bits.

Surprisingly I was directly messaged by a chap called Paul (pgunter), who encourage me to sign up on ZRoadster.org, and that I would get plenty of assistance and support. I gave it a go and signed up, at which point I got in contact with Gaz as well.

After a bit of encouragement I was convinced to meet up on a cruise being organised by Paul in the New Forest. This would give Paul and Gary a chance to have a look over Panther and give an honest opinion on what needed doing.

There was a few small problems with this plan, as it was Thursday and the cruise was on Saturday. The main problems were no tax, insurance or break down cover and the car hadn’t been on the road for some time. After a few phone calls and rushing around like a loony, I managed to get everything done by 5pm on the Friday, ready for the next morning.

To be continued…

I just knew there was going to be a story behind BMBabe! Keep the details coming, it snowed for the first time here yesterday so soon I'll need something interesting happening for about 8-10 months while I give weather/snow reports from Canada. Glad Paul and Gaz and Lee have been so helpful. Seems to be a trait of only members on this forum. JIM

Part two of “Project Panther”

7 AM Saturday morning after nooooo sleep due to the excitement of getting back in Panther and meeting the guys after months of messages. I’m on the way to Chievely Services to meet up with Gaz, and wow what a drive. Got a tad emotional just for the pure fact I am driving Panther again! The excitement grew as I turned in to the car park and there was Gaz and Rosie waiting for me and Panther. Jumped straight out the car and almost knocked Gaz over trying to greet him with a big hug. After getting Gaz over the shock of meeting the crazy blonde I was soon told off for making out that Panther was worse than she looked! We took a few pics, and then headed off further down south in convoy to meet up with the rest at a McDonalds down near the New Forest.

When Gaz, Rosie, Panther and I arrived we were greeted not just by Paul but 3 other Zeds. Paul then got the same greeting but being taller managed to stay on his feet. I got to meet Angela and her 2.8, Allison and Steve with their Velvet Blue Individual. Straight away us girls got together and started nattering about our zeds.

After an hour or so it was cruise time, so off we head in to the New Forest. Along the way we turned many heads, of course you don’t see 5 zeds in convoy every day do you? Wow what a beautiful day we all had roofs down cruising through the forest with lots of waves from other drivers, walkers & cyclists and my new mate Dave the pony. Yet again I got emotional due to all the excitement. First stop was lunch at Lepe Beach and we all stuffed our faces and talked more zed stuff. I used this opportunity to show off my very old but pristine original Zed accessory brochure. Not sure if they were impressed or just humouring me.

After lunch Gaz got all techy and brought his code reader out itching to get his hands on Panther to see if he could see anything interesting which may be causing some of her problems.

Fault codes showed as:
P0140 O2 Sensor Bank One Sensor 2
P0141 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Sensor 2
P0369 Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1

Fault codes reset, and didn’t come back on after restarting engine (however the P0141 has returned a week later but not the others).

A quick look over the engine bay showed a really mucky air filter, and splitting in the air in take pipes. The oil level was down on minimum and causing the oil light to come on. By this time Gaz was checking the tyre pressures (with his posh BMW tyre pressure thing) and a small crowd formed to watch the excitement!

We then did some more driving around the New Forest still enjoying the sunshine, until Paul pulled us in to a small muddy car park for a photo opportunity with all the zeds lined up. A small crowd of horses appeared as well, as if judging the cars in a competition. We then headed back to the initial meetup point for more coffee and chatting about the day. Finally we all headed home, and YES! Panther made it home no breakdown cover was needed.

To be continued…

Nothing is worse than that.
I have never seen a more depressing program on the TV. If that's real life in the East end I thank God I live in Lincolnshire.

The split hoses are causing your engine code as unmetered air is getting i the engine, the sensor is reading out of tolerance, looking forward to part 3.......

That's a good point Rich, we are actually past this stage in the project now - but won't spoil any surprises. We are actually at Part 4 in the project, but part 3 hasn't been written up yet!

I'm back over at Lees tomorrow evening for more tinkering and will reset and check the codes again ;)
