my car has started making a constant noise from the alternator / belt / pulley , hard to say exactly what, but if i spray wd40 onto the alternator pulley the noise goes away for about 5 mins, then its back.

it sounds like a bearing noise rather than a clunking noise, at first i thought it was a slipping belt, it still could be i guess.

will try upload a video later as not near garage at moment, but any ideas?

Likely the belt worn/hard. Could be the original from new even. I would take the belt off the spin all the pulleys and listen for any bearing noise at.

Thank you good idea.

How did the garage day go?
It was a good one as usual, although as someone said there were fewer cars here compared to previous Shed days.
Hope you can make the next one.

Tony.

The AC system has its own, separate belt. The alternator belt drives the power steering pump and water pump.

I've found that they even squeal with a new belt. Fitting the slightly shorter belt makes the tensioner work harder and eliminates the equal.

The belt tensioner with the hydraulic 'shock absorber' isn't as good as the spring loaded one.
