No sooner I put the tools away from replacing the exhaust downpipe bolts going to get them out again, alternator failing, not charging made it home with 11 volts. Alternator was a used one I put in whilst my original was rebuilt last year so the rebuilt unit is in the garage wondering if I should just change the diode pack or change the units over less work just changing the diode pack. Think I will change the units then have the duff one rebuilt as a spare. Use a local Alternator and Starter rebuilder who is very resonable and uses oem diode packs when servicing BMW Alternators.

On the bright side you have already replaced it once so it should be easier second time around, plus you have a refurbished replacement ready to go. Mine has done 110 thousand miles and is 24 years old so it's a miracle it still works 🤞

Replaced unit today charging resumed will have failed unit rebuilt by my local man. Just noticed the O ring at bottom pipe on expansion tank is weeping so that's the next job, will order a BMW O ring and replace all the coolant whilst I am at it.

Post Mortum on the failed alternator, my man said the slip rings were toast, rebuilt and passed his testing. Its sitting on the shelf now in the Shed as a spare. As to the expansion/filler tank, found a pinhole in one of its sides it wasn't the O ring. New tank fitted new coolant and all back to normal.
