We are going to change our heating system this year as our Park Ray has just about had it. We had decided on oil but then someone suggested air source heating. We don't know much about it and someone is going to visit to explain about it and what grants you can get.Just wondered if anyone on here has this heating or knows anyone who has got it and if it is good. Our house was built in 1899 do there are no cavity walls to insulate, so we don't know if air source would work for us. Any information would be gratefully received.
Thanks Mary

Hi, I know of several people that use that system and the trick is sizing. The water source are better but you need to drill two wells, an inlet and outlet to put the water back in the ground. Or the coil tube system where a grid of tubes are laid out over your property and connected to heat manifolds and continuous cycled. Here in Canada where we battle -40* all work well. Can you get into a basement or crawl space under the main floor? If so you can use tankless water heater running through a grid filled with an anti freeze to heat radiantly through your floor. If you could heat with oil you can heat with any other type of heat as you don't have insulation in the walls now. Personally I would go with the tankless system as it's cheap and easily maintained. I sell tankless in Canada and bought some big units a few years ago in the UK so sourcing shouldn't be a problem. I love your old houses, got any pics? JIM

Thanks Jim, I've never heard of tankless heating. Unfortunately we don't have a cellar and the floors in most of downstairs are concrete. Our house maybe old but it is a normal, three bed semi detached house, not particularly pretty but it is ours. Mary

Hi Mary, nice to make your acquaintance. You may be able to devise a tankless system that uses a baseboard radiator type system which would leave them exposed as well as the piping involved. It can be set up easily with smaller units giving you control over Specific areas or go with a big unit and control it with bypass valves for controls. The tankless will hear water almost instantly up to about 140*f and are digitally adjustable. Check out the web and you will get an idea what I'm on about. Tankless come in gas, propane and electric to suit most needs. Naturally it's not as quick as a forced air system but small fans can be built in to circulate quicker. Let me know if I can assist in any way. You may start a trend. JIM

Hi we have 3 X 145 square meter log houses that run on ground source heat transfer,or coiled loop some call it .we put underfloor pipeing when we built them as it's a gentle heat and lends itself well to this type of system.its not a instant blast of heat the way ours works but I it's surprisingly efficient especially with solar panels to heat the water!

Hi, unfortunately Mary has solid floors and no space under that is usable. The other option is lay the piping and cover the floor over in concert or wood with a covering such as tile, cork, carpet, etc. very cozy on the feet.
Mary, there are many solutions to your problem, just do your research, get several quotes and enjoy. JIM
