Browsing the Web, I came across this pair up for grabs this Saturday at Anglican Car Auctions, Kings Lynn.

Lot 5 - 1997, 34,000kms, last MOT 2011 estimate £8,000 - £10,000. RHD, but I am guessing it is an import.

Lot 80 - 1999, 55,000 miles, comprehensive MOT history & FSH. Estimate £15,500 - £17,500.

The good news is that they are in a Classic rather than a Modern auction.

First one has wrong mirrors, seems like a lot of money for a car that might be 'wrong' (also had a shed roof fall on it by the looks of it).

Good spot Andy. Not sure about the orange indicators, I thought the M were all clear lenses.

Looking at the one thats been imported, it seems very clean (excluding the crap on the bonnet) if it has been left in a barn for and extended period of time!
Just checked out its MOT history: it was first MOT'd in August 2007 at 29,106 kms, so its only done 5k in the last 9 and a bit years. The last MOT was November 20011 at 34,476 kms.

Even taking into account the wing mirrors and the potential import specification, it could be a bargain for someone. I am of course making a massive assumption that there is nothing else wrong with it.

Bit suspicious the barn car has no photos of the interior. However the seats appear to be present and the nearside door card certainly is. You can just about see the blue on the door card which according to bmwvin is what you would expect to find.

If I had the money and was serious about an M I'd happily take a journey to have a look. Too far for me to go just out of curiosity though.

Okay, here's my theory.

bmwvin suggests the barn car was produced for the German market and was built as left-hand drive. The steering wheel is clearly on the right. So it looks like it's been converted to right-hand drive which would also quite possibly explain why the wing mirrors and headlamps are not M. They've just had regular parts stuck on when it was converted.

Agree if it only reaches the 10k it will potentially be a bargain, but it only takes a couple of interested people to push the price up.

The number plate holder on the first one is also not colour coded, something just not right about that car!

Too much work to convert from LHD to RHD, surely not enough money in the cars to justify this?

It's also never sat in that barn for any length of time, way to shiny. The wood and bits have been put on it just for the photos to give the appearance it's been there for a while IMHO. Something doesn't seem right.

Nice find that, strangely I had a message last night about one of these being shipped to me for an overhaul.

I agree Brian. But the build data speaks for itself. Steering=LL not RL

The plot is thickening. I've made plans to go to the auction.
I can see the LL on the BMW site.
I've also made arrangements with Lee to do the work should I be successful. Needs a bit more digging I think.
