We had a man drop his 56 plate Z4 2.5 in today complaining of an oil leak which he thought was from the rocker cover gasket. On closer inspection the oil appeared to be running uphill, if it was coming from the gasket.
I removed the plastic engine cover and spotted that the new oil around the engine filler cap had run under the plastic cover and filled casting "holes" on the cover and settling round the spark plugs. Culprit here was a non steady hand when topping up the oil. Cleaned off the excess with the vacuum sucker and then dried off with brake cleaner. For good measure I removed the filler cap sealing washer, cleaned and dried it and re-fitted it the other way up giving a flatter sealing face.

Hopefully, with a steady hand, that should be the end of that:thumbsup:

Tony.

I spent 30 minutes chasing a leak on my Z4. I felt such an idiot when it traced back to the filler cap.

I suppose you go into panic mode when you find a leak on a new car.

It can make you worry without due cause mate. But, we've all done that!
