Apologies for the long post...
My plan with this car was to sort out the usual bits of rust (tank straps, spare wheel carrier and X-brace and I'd already got replacement rear beam and trailing arms), update the suspension and bushes, refurbish the wheels and replace and/or repaint all the panels but I stupidly started backwards and it was only after I got the wheels refurbished plus bought most of the panels and had them painted that I took the old panels off and discovered the amount of rust on the car (see bad bits below).
I was quoted £1200 to have the welding done properly (the jacking points would still be functional) and as the car has only covered 50000 miles I still thought it would be a good investment getting it all done but I had also booked a 3-month long holiday of a lifetime and unfortunately I then lost a chunk of income due to work being cancelled because of the bad weather we've been having; to cut a long story short I no longer have the funds to do the work or in fact a workshop in which to do it so I've decide to try and sell the car as a project rather than break it even though I'd be better off doing the latter. I believe you could buy this as a project, spend under £2000 more to get it up to standard and have a car worth around £6000+ especially if you have the space and time to do most of the work yourself.
The car is an Atlanta Blue manual 2.8 M52B28 Roadster from August 1998 and therefore one of the last cars before the TU engine and has only covered a registered 50000 miles. It may be a special model as it has burgundy leather, aircon and headlamp washers(?).
For a quick sale I'll add the hard top for just £250 more - although the hard top has two large chips and the headlining is loose and will need some TLC it would still sell for £500+.
Bad bits:
The chassis needs welding at all four jacking points and rust has attacked the usual places such as the spare wheel carrier, probably the tank straps (I haven't looked closely), the front X-brace, brake backing plates, ARBs, rear beam and trailing arms.
It will need the suspension and bushes replacing (although the rear springs are new and almost new rear beam bushes are provided).
The seats, electrically adjustable burgundy leather, have got broken seat belt guides and a bit of scratching of the leather in that area.
The rear screen is split.
Some lacquer has come off the panel behind the roof (in the gap where the boot lid sits).
It will need a new battery.
Oh, and it will need trailering home as none of the body panels have been refitted - but I can help with that at cost (trailer hire £40 plus fuel).
Good bits:
The engine bay is almost immaculate!
The headlamps were polished for the MOT.
It has an MOT until mid-January 2020 - only advisory was underbody rust!
New or used rust free front wings, sills (one is slightly dented) and rear quarters that have been professionally sealed and painted - they have never been fitted to the car.
The front and rear bumpers have been repainted - not fitted since painting..
Includes a replacement zipped rear window or a whole replacement roof that was on my previous Zed.
The front and rear disks and pads have only covered about 20 miles - fitted for the MOT.
It had an oil service for the MOT but will come with a brand new coolant system refresh kit (plus plugs and fuel filter) which includes an EMP water pump (£130 from the USA) with an aluminium pulley and as it has aircon I can supply the lower temp auxiliary fan switch if you want to do a viscous fan delete.
Includes a spare rear beam that needs a minor de-rust clean and paint but has newish (1000 miles) Powerflex black bushes fitted.
Includes two trailing arms that again need some work but are relatively rust free compared to the ones on the car.
Includes two replacement seat belt guides (the seat bushes have already been done).
Includes a set of door handle gaskets.
Includes a new aerial grommet.
Includes genuine original BMW matching burgundy floor mats - rare?
Includes two brand new headlamp washer jets - cost £80.
The mirrors are totally blemish free and move!
I've included some photos of the chassis rust - I've been quoted £1200 to have them done professionally at a high end body shop but that means having them fabricated to the original shape to take the jacking point plastics.
If I broke this as it is I reckon I'd easily get above £2000 just for the major parts (wheels, hard top & fitting kit, panels, low mileage engine/gearbox, spare soft top) so that's what I'm looking for but for the whole car as a project.
Asking price £2000 or for a quick sale £2250 including the hard top and fitting kit.
Also, if you want to upgrade the suspension and/or brakes I'm also selling a partially new Bilstein/Eibach kit, a Powerflex Rear Suspension
PS: The holes in some of the photos below are where the jacking point plastics go and it hasn't just rusted through everywhere. If you think it is a lost cause let me know and I'll think about breaking it.
