Collected it Friday and took it out in the Peak District today.

The roof worked fine off the key when I picked it up (no smartop so retracts only) and from inside the car.

Driving round the Peak District today for about 2 hours (roof up due to inclement weather) I had the roof warning light come on intermittently on 2 occasions. It didn't stay on for long but I managed to navigate the iDrive screen to see a message about the roof not being latched correctly before it went off.

Any ideas what I should be looking at to resolve - unfortunately not had chance to get the code reader on it due to the crap weather?

First and foremost, get a code reader on it, or you're just guessing.

Tony.

Managed to plug the code reader in and initially got a load of what I suspected were historical codes so I cleared them all and went on a good run.

Repeated the process and the following were returned - from what I've read in Robbi's roof post I'm thinking I probably need to replace the micro switches

Although I'd checked for water ingress around the roof motor when I collected the car I had a proper look today and also checked the salmon relays. Absolutely no signs of ingress (historically or currently) but suspect the relays are original so need to get a couple of those as well.

Might also be worth checking the parts of wiring loom that are known to wear through

Garrie will tag Dave @Mad2718 into this as Ant his friend had issues with the e89 he uses not the first time that particular zed has had roof problems on a Scottish run.
Was some kind of wiring issue this time which they managed to sort.
But Dave may have something to contribute that may help.

Stephen.

If the warning comes up randomly when driving without doing anything, chances are it is your bootlid microswitches. But it could be a broken wire in the roof loom. Hopefully it is the former, as those are cheap and an easy fix.
The A698 code points to them. The other code is a by-product of the first, so ignore it.

I can't believe after 3,500 E89 Z4s, you haven't had this problem before. EVERYBODY has this happen on an E89 sooner or later (usually sooner).;)

Thanks but I've never had a roof issue with any of the previous E89's I've owned

If you need to change the micro switches you can use ones for the Mini. They MUCH less expensive, you just need to extend the wires. I can give you the part numbers when I get home.

Had mine for 5 years and done nearly 30k in her, roof gets used a lot and so far no issues, dreading the day though because its going to happen.

Much appreciated Tony - roof operation is fine at the moment, just the occasional bong, so I'll wait on your return for the associated part numbers 👍

Genuine BMW ones from Sopers are £16 each (or were last year). Not expensive by BMW standards IMO.

Hi Gary, as Stevo mentioned my friend borrows an e89 and most recently had issues with the boot lid not closing properly , had to release the locking mechanism and found small white connector on drivers side in the mechanism which has 3 or 4 very thin wires that move when the boot/roof are activated . One of these had broken so
Had to make a new link in the wire( green wire ) on this occasion then all started working properly. Hope this helps

Decided to get someone who knows what they are doing to look at the car rather than mess with it myself. So the car is booked in with Mike at the Zedshed in Warrington next week - fingers crossed for a "while-u-wait" resolution.

Fortunately the intermitent fault is not preventing me from using the car and the roof does still operate
