16 pin diag port problem

Strange one this...

The 16 pin round diag port on my 00 plate 2.0 doesn't communicate, obd 20 pin works fine. If it plug in a connector into the 16pin one it shorts out a 10amp fuse #26 for the reverse light (but doesn't affect the light, weird I know). Once that happens the 20pin obd doesn't communicate or provide power to a reader.

Further more the car will not start only run the starter motor but not start up.

Change that fuse and its happy again.

Anyone got a bright idea? As I need to do an airbag reset.

To note, I've done the service reset with a paperclip and that worked fine.

The Air bag computer is only available via the 20 pin plug in the engine bay. There is an adapter lead on Flea-bay to allow,you to connect to the 20 pin plug. The 16 pin ODBII port only gives access to the DME.

Had me confused when I read your post the OBD2 socket under the steering wheel is oblong not round, the OBD2 Round socket under the bonnet is the one you want to use to communicate with all modules in the diagnostics.
Murray is correct in saying that the oblong socket will only communicate with the engine module.
A Round to oblong OBD2 cable is available on ebay. You can also get a B800 Airbag code reader and reset tool on Ebay that is supplied with the oblong to round OBD2 cable. Kill two birds with one stone if you haven't already got a airbag reader.

You can get cheaper from China but obviously shipping takes longer, the link says UK based in Ilford so would be quicker and at £15 + 4.50 postage not a lot more.

As to why the oblong socket is blowing a fuse I would suspect a short in the socket wiring, remove it from the panel and have a good look at the wiring and the socket to check for bad connections and shorts between pins.

Hi guys, sorry I've not been clear in my post. Its the round 16 pin connector that causes fuse 26 to blow when I power up the car with the connector in. That said it does blow with the normal cap (with pins) inserted, guessing my obd2 to round connection adapter could be bad?

The obd2 rectangular connector works fine every time until I use the adapter in the round connector and blow fuse 26.

Writing down makes me think the adapter is at fault...

Thoughts?

OK, check the wiring underneath the round under bonnet socket for shorts/corroded wires they can get a build up of green gunge on them with age. Use contact cleaner on them if they are dirty.

If its blowing fuses with its cover cap fitted then almost certain there is a short in the socket itself which would mean your adapter lead may be ok. Test out the adapter using a volt meter for continuity between the pins to make sure it is ok.

I'd have to agree with the above posts if the 20 pin diag connection under the bonnet is shorting with its own cap on then must be a short somewhere.
You will need to get that fixed before you will be able to reset the airbag light .
As again already posted you cannot reset using the 16 pin internal port.

I posted about my no start issue a couple days ago and came across this thread in my research. It sounds like it has very similar symptoms to mine. I keep blowing my reverse light fuse but I did not think anything of it because my car is a manual swap so I just assumed the reverse lights were wired up wrong. My car is not connecting to a scanner through the 16 pin port on the passenger side. I’m just wondering if the two are possibly connected or if it is just a coincidence.

The 16 pin connector under the dash on ANY Z3 only reads the motor and Auto Gearbox modules. Nothing else.
