That doesn't feel right - couldn't the car be sold and funds given to charity.

There’s more to this story. It’s “alleged” to involve tax evasion and fraud (so probably money laundering). It’s also a cat B so can’t be returned to the road.

I saw this last week. The car was seized when the guy attended a court hearing. He parked it outside the court on the pavement. When the cops saw it they did the usual checks and the guy was driving without insurance.
He got what he deserved.

Why destroy it? Impound it and sell it to the highest bidder to get some badly needed funds into the Police piggy bank?

The police can't seize goods to sell on. It not ethical. The exception is a seizure under proceeds of crime whereby the courts will grant a perectage of the value recovered to the force dealing. Also news flash....the police don't get the money from speed cameras!
