“There is a curse.
They say:
May you live in interesting times.”
― Terry Pratchett, Interesting Times.

"May you live in interesting times" is an English expression which purports to be a translation of a traditional Chinese curse. While seemingly a blessing, the expression is normally used ironically; life is better in "uninteresting times" of peace and tranquillity than in "interesting" ones, which are usually times of trouble.

Well let's face it, we are currently living in interesting times. The extraordinary is pretty much common place right now, and we all have to take extra steps to ensure everyone's safety.

So, what the fudge does that have to do with buying and selling on a car forum I hear you say. In any online transaction there is a mechanism of exchange, and it's the physical exchange I'm referring to. Sending money to some stranger on the internet is already covered in other posts and warnings on here.

What isn't covered is the moving of parts from one person to another. I know we are all sat bored looking for things to do, so scouring the internet looking for parts to fix stuff is probably higher up on your list than getting out of your pyjamas. But for the love of everyone remember that SOCIAL DISTANCING and TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS are in place for a reason. Remember that the courier & postal networks are under tremendous strain and are only kept going through people who generally have NO CHOICE but to work - and may not be desperately happy in doing so. Whether clogging the postal/courier networks up with second hand car parts is a good or bad thing at the moment is of course a whole discussion on it's own.

Of course I can't stop you from doing what you do, but I would like you all to consider the bigger picture here. Sneaking in to your car, putting on your stetson and evading smokeys like your The Bandit is totally a dick thing to do to grab a few car parts you likely won't be able to use for 6 months.

You are all adults, you've all heard and read what's in the news and what's expected of us all. So, if buying and selling becomes part of the problem, I'll be getting all Boris Johnson and look to bring in restrictions on it.

/rant

Be safe people.

“You could say to the universe this is not fair. And the universe would say: Oh, isn’t it? Sorry.”
― Terry Pratchett, Interesting Times

I agree with everything you say for face to face business. It shouldn't be happening. However there's nothing wrong with doing business now and arranging collection/payment for later.

Use of the postal service is perhaps a little more open to personal view.

My view is many companies need your business to survive and keep people in jobs. There are no restrictions I'm aware of announced by the government for using postal services. And the postal companies are taking precautions by not having close contact. Those same postal companies also need to keep people in jobs so need your orders. Many companies have messages on their websites saying they remain open for delivery only and business is normal in that respect. The postal companies also offer no challenge to using their services for specific reasons only.

Whether you should be taking parcels to the Post Office is another matter. But counters remain open and are often inside other shops like Tesco that you may be visiting for essentials anyway.

I'm sure others will have their own view and may be avoiding buying by post and I respect that.

While I'm limiting the amount of buying and selling to things I need as opposed to want couriers and Royal Mail people don't need to get items signed for on delivery and at out local PO I tell them by phone I will be there in say 5 minutes and I leave a sanitized package with a sanitized £5 in a sanitized poly bag outside the door. Change goes in the charity box on the counter. We have to send Tax returns monthly to the USA for the villa even if it is a ZERO amount, for these we need proof of postage too and we can do these on a similar basis.

Tony.

@mrscalex

I think you will find that Gary is more on about private selling where the people actually arrange to meet. This is not aimed at companies but idiots who drive miles to collect parts when they really should not as it’s against the guidelines.

I actually agree with @GazHyde on this 100%. If you have read the press about the person driving up to Manchester to collect his eBay purchase for one. It’s not needed in the current climate and puts people’s lives at risk. Plain and simple.

Well that ebay story beggered belief. 220 mile round trip for £15 of UPVC windows and he put his wife in the boot as there was no room in the car.

Gaz refers to the postal service, I think @mrscalex has a very good point that the postal services are keepoing business solvent

all of which are under a lot of stress with staff off. @Rally will tell you how much. It does not get away from the fact that the main part of Gaza’s post is about social distancing and travel restrictions. This virus is no joke and we all just need to consider that normal life is not possible at the moment. It’s going to be many months before we can even think about how to change.

Anyone that orders anything off the internet that's not essential such as food and medical supplies are wasting the services of couriers that need to deliver vital equipment.
THINK BEFORE YOU SHOP!!! AND THINK BEFORE YOU PUT UP A FOR SALE POST, IS IT NECESSARY IS IT ESSENTIAL!!!

The sooner people accept this is going to take many weeks/months to get through the better. There are reasons for the "social distancing" which will only become apparent to some people as they die, sadly these morons will take many more with them.

You lot could debate having a debate about debating. It’s like you’re mass-debaters. Honestly.

It’s going to get worse before it gets better. Less people I meet at the moment the better in my mind. Even though I love to socialise with my BMW friends. Christ even the #zedshed is suspended at the moment. First time in many many years.

There's some merit in what you say, however, there are some desperate people with families out there.

Got to agree with Gaz.

Hopefully in 5-8 weeks, some of the current constraints and restrictions may be relaxed a little. Until then, let's keep current available resources only for supporting the health emergency.

Yes - Some businesses are able to continue on line and use distribution services. They will have mechanisms to do that without any face-to-face interaction. That is fine. It is keeping some people with a bit of income. Should the bandwidth disappear from the delivery system because of more critical needs, then resources will be re-allocated as necessary.

Yes - we all have a great deal of free time. Time that we'd like to use productively.
As far as one-to-one private sales. We as a group don't need to be or shouldn't be adding to the burden or increasing risks for anyone. Be critical. Ask yourself - "Want or need?".
Are you going to die or have your health impacted if you don't get something for a month or two? If not, it'll probably wait.

I really don't appreciate a lecture on the seriousness of the current situation, my point is that I have seen no guidelines regarding the postal services,
